Beaching Catamarans

These boats are designed to sit on their bottoms which is a flat protected panel, of course you choose the spot carefully. As for rudders they have kick/lift up cassettes and the daggers boards are, naturally, lifted.

Drying out is very common in our parts and facilitated by huge areas of sand and sand/mud combinations.
Here the small Oram 39' in the foreground and the Lightwave 38' are in front of the Darwin Sailing Club, loading stores.

I've beached Exit Only a couple of times and we sunk in the mud because we were in rivers. I tend to avoid beaching where there is any possiblity of wave action from mother nature or from other vessels.

The suction of soft mud is strong. When the tide comes in, the water rises up quite a ways on the hull before the boat breaks suction. Interesting to experience.

PDQ built a few 32's and 36's with skegs. There were problems with these as the skegged rudders were less efficient and were not dynamically balanced.

If it is hard sand and you are pointing the right way, without a strong wash from the flood , no probs.

In Thailand , 35ft cat stranded, on strand, 2 furrows dug back to the surf, Elephant hired from tourist ride camp, the elephant seemed to enjoy dragging the boat back into the water.

Warning: Not all catamarans regardless of skegs by the rudders can be beached. A lot of the mini keels are not designed to hold the weight of the boat. If you need a cat that can be beached check with the designers or manufacturers before buying. Ugly when the keels get pushed through the bottom of the boat.

Two shots of the same boat. 44' Cat, designed and built by Bob Smith of BC Canada. I have seen Bob beach his boat often. It sure makes it easier to wash the bottom. This is in Sea of Cortez. Protected and sandy....:-)

Hi all, thanks for the mega response...yes to all the safety conscious I will be aware of prevailing and waves...Im stuck here in blighty and feeling a little boat-sick..Ive just returned from seven year cruise so itching to get away again.I have visited with a few catamarans and have fell for the sheer area of living space they afford.;and of course my wife hates heeling! something Im prepared to let go now that the years advance.again fair winds to all keep up the banter its all we have.mike

Skegs are not required if the rudders are mounted high enough up from the keels - my rudders have only partial skegs, but my keels are quite long and solid and were factory-fitted with shoes in order to permit the boat to be settled on the bottom during low tides. A common attribute amongst the British- built cats.

My old Prout has skegged rudders and sits flat and easy on sand, mud or shingle. (A couple of hours 'beached' in Southampton water was no problem).
With a good forecast and a clean beach it's a cheap way of cleaning the weed off but de-antifouling will need blind neighbours.
It's also a good way of getting repairs / maintenance done if you are into island cruising.
