If someone needs an Orma 60...

... we just anchored next to the sorry remains of UltimEmotion in the bay of Aveiro.
Can't be expensive, lol, but needs a bit of cash to be fixed.

Well guess she is about done, sad to see such a cool boat in such a sorry state.

A bit more info (in French, perhaps use Google translate if you don't understand it):

Re: If someone needs an Orma 60...

Went onboard for a little bit of what some would call "urban exploration".

What a very cool boat she was.

The platform itself (Hulls, beams and deck) looks still looks structurally sound & salvageable, apart from some minor issues on the starboard hull.

Almost anything valuable is gone, despite the huge winches and coffee grinder as well as the engine and appendages which are still there.

The electronics all seem dead due to water ingress.

So, you basically need to put her on the hard remove everything and add back all the expensive bits and you are ready to go :-)

Race boats at the end of their careers have a very low market value. Not competitive for racing and not very practicable as cruisers. There have been a couple of instances where cruisers have converted race boats but they are rare.

Agreed.

Interior space is minimal. 2 pipe bunks, a navtable, a bit of storage and that's it.
The engine is in the same space.

Surely a great thing for a fairly young person who is frugal when it comes to comfort, loves the thrill of sailing a big boat fast and far.
The person would need to be a very very experienced sailor as well and be cautious enough to not flip her again.

Mind you maintenance is expensive on such a boat, as are any port fees.

I did a bit more research, apparently she has been lengthened to 23m.

If I would try to become her new owner (I will not!), I'd try to talk to get her for 1€ and take the burden of ownership of who ever owns her currently.
If the current owner has a lot of gear in store somewhere that should be factored in. It will likely not be new stuff and they may want to get rid of this too.

Btw. the prices in the following are ridiculous in my view.

Re: If someone needs an Orma 60...

Imagine if you will..
You have a few million in the bank and want to sail. You want to be comfortable. You want a GIANT cat.
Your choice is to buy a new possibly custom luxury cat..
Or to get a racing cat for free that requires a crew of 6, can carry enough supplies for lunch and dinner for them for a day and you cant sleep on and put 2 million into :P

These racing cats are all over the nonbroker sites for pocket change... literally high 6 figure boats for what a rusty 1987 ford pickup sells for..

Well, first, it's a tri and not a cat.

Secondly they are designed especially that they can be single-handed. Even though you need a lot of experience to do so.

Not every one is after a Condomaran style luxury boat. There are thrillseekers around.

As I wrote it would need a very special person with a very specific mindset and it certainly should not be someone who is looking after getting their investment back. Of course it will never be competitive at the same level as when raced as at the time it was built initially.

Thirdly you could renovate this one with approximately 150 000€ if you have the skills & time to do a lot yourself and you are good at sourcing used equipment.
Good chance to find a lot of older used stuff in France for this kind of boat.
Certainly no need for millions. Structurally she seems intact.

It might be foolish in some folks view, but not in some others.

I'm certainly not interested into doing this myself [emoji4]

Ya the number of hulls is what is important here...

You think you could renovate that from a sunken hull to a functional trimaran for 150k? seriously????

I have been on the boat and had a thorough look. Structurally she is intact.
Btw. I have training as a professional boatwright.

Appendages are there, you need a rig with sails & the deck hardware and of course some laminate, paint and electronics.

The Lombardini engine looks salvageable, it was high above the waterline when she was flipped.

If you go cheap on the electronics and focus on the other stuff and buy used were you can, I'd say 150 000-200 000€ approx for a low cost refit if you do the work yourself and don't count your hours in.
I am not talking of a professional refit to race condition.

Absolutely certain no were near to the "millions" you mentioned.

If you contract a shipyard and buy everything new it's of course a totally different ballgame.
But if you are into the everything new type of stuff you buy a new boat anyway.

Well it definitely sounds like you could do it. I doubt many of us could though

Re: If someone needs an Orma 60...

Franziska sounds like she is ripe to be converted to a junk rig schooner tri, or even a standard ketch rig like Erik Tabarly had on Pen Duick IV. A couple of tents on the deck when at anchor covers the accommodation issue. I bet a boat like that would still perform well with any rig.
Cheers

I like the low tech split rig idea, Wharram wingsails and a deck top cabin platform to get out of the skinny hulls.
