What do these pics reveal?

What can you discern by looking closely at this engine photo and some close ups?

I have some thoughts but wondering what the group can conclude.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Kubota block? That’s good if I’m right.

Oil could be from anywhere, hose maybe.

Not at all maintained. That’s not a good sign, but not a certain death sentence

Conclusion? When the rusty water erupted, they used the fiberglass webbing to hold the hose together. Probably was under way and by the time they got home, disinterested in cleanup. No idea why not addressed further, later on.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Any evidence that at least the lower portion of the engine was under water? I see Some very rusty hose clamps. The lower section of the sound panel quite dirty. Owner says boat has sat in the slip for two years and at some point the batteries died so no bilge pump I assume. If there was a significant height of water would it be more obvious than what u see in the images?

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Saltwater boat. Rotted hoses, several connected to nothing or missing clamps. Poorly/minimally maintained. Does look like a Kubota. Ceiling tile sound insulation, may contain asbestos and should be removed and disposed of very carefully. I'd be tempted to pull the engine and redo the whole mess. Electrical is probably corroded up the wire too.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Is this a V drive by chance and what is the loose hose end supposed to be fitted to?

Can the engine be lifted out and a really good clean and make over/

Pete

Took me a couple looks to figure out the engine is backwards.

I have similar fiberglass fabric wrapped on my exhaust riser, it was professionally done for insulation, after a new riser installed, not as a repair job. Is that normal? I think that's what I see in the photo of the webbing / wrap.

As I understand it, It can really help contain the heat until the water and exhaust get out the Stern instead of radiating into the engine room environs.

That is a messy engine, and it looks like "sludge" has settled on hoses, on filter, from oil leaks and high water in that area.

Would look in other parts of the boat (behind cabinets, in lockers, in lazarette, etc, ) to see if the boat was previously flooded (storm, hurricane damage, etc.). Look for high water marks on wood bulkheads, behind cushions, salt water stains (or dried salt), if the boat was in salt water area.

Interesting point.

I assumed the wrap was done for safety reasons, by insulating that hot pipe so that anyone working in the engine space while the engine was running would be less likely to be badly burned by accidentally touching that large section of hot pipe while near or maintaining the engine.

I see this wrap similar to what is done on some motorcycle exhausts, to prevent burns of the user/rider/sailor/mechanic.

But, hey, that was just how I see it. There might be other good reasons.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

look closely at the 2nd photo on right....I see a black hose with a hose clamp that does not appear to be connected to anything laying on the bilge floor....additionally, the lower wood on the left side of the exhaust appears to be rather rotted away.....the water strainer hose clamps appear badly rusted....

I go along with other threads....I see a lot of rust and corrosion in places that it should not be....leading me to believe this boat has seen some water inside the boat..
