I see this wrap similar to what is done on some motorcycle exhausts, to prevent burns of the user/rider/sailor/mechanic.

But, hey, that was just how I see it. There might be other good reasons.

Yes, and the wrap is spotless, so that it appears to be more recent than the rusty water intrustion, which appears to have splattered.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

There is lots to comment on but I only a couple of big things.

I don’t know about the water level, can’t really tell. I guess if the water came up there is enough oil that it should have left a clear high tide mark, especially in the whiteish sound panels.

I am a bit more concerned with the exhaust elbow. That looks too much like a situation I had. The engine sits low and it needs the high lift to prevent back-flow. The POTENTIAL problem is that with all that weight on the dry part of the exhaust it gets quite heavy. Then the vibration can shear the bolts holding the elevated exhaust elbow to the engine. So from one perspective this is a good solution to keeping water out of the engine. But it opens another problem, failure of the exhaust elbow.

And maybe that is why there is all that new wrap, it failed in some way and was repaired recently. Conjecture only.

Clearly you are looking at low cost boats that need some love. And that is OK, I get it.

This being an older boat it is unlikely this fault is fatal. I would figure the cost of a new exhaust elbow set up. And not ine cobbled together from black pile, something relatively light.

Other than that my eyes fell on what I think is the water strainer. Where is the through hull for that?

I think I see 2 diesel filters. A little surprising given the spartan maintenance otherwise. Might be a story there.

I am assuming the engine can be lifted out straight up through the companionway. That is a nice feature.

Access looks better than many I have seen.

If this engine compartment is indicative of the rest of the boat, you'd see my butt walking, maybe even running, away....

Yeah, by bracing the standpipe to the bulkhead instead of the engine it's a disaster in waiting.
It's not potential, it is.
Notice how the exhaust hose from the standpipe is collapsed due to not having any support along its length.
That hose doesn't look to be the wire-reinforced type, (which is NOT a bad thing,) but whether or not, it still needs support.
The engine seacock appears to be buried under the strainer, imagine trying to work on that.
Tons of grossly overlength hose clamps that are just waiting to strip the skin from anybody working around that area.
But hey, some steam cleaning and a buff job, good to go, right?

Re: What do these pics reveal?

to add fuel to the fire the hose clamp on the water strainer looks badly rusted....clearly not a stainless steel hose clamp...

I can't tell if the thru'hull fitting for the water strainer has a open/close valve handle. I see a handle of sorts, but can't make out what it is. If it is a handle, it appears to be in the closed position.

The water strainer does not appear to be connected to anything, probably why the valve is closed.
i

Unusual to see a 90 degree bend on immediately following the thru' hull.....

Re: What do these pics reveal?

I agree with everything said so far .... plus ..

If there is a metal fuel tank behind those disintegrating acoustic tiles, my money is on it being badly corroded.

A battery cable with corroded terminal looks to be lying on top of the fuel filter is some seriously deranged electrical work.

I can only imagine what they's done to the electrical system and a propane system if there is one.

What you are seeing is only the tip of the iceberg. Buy it and it'll be the most expensive boat you ever own.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

FWC side of cooling system has two open hoses. Might be running as salt water cooled. PVC fitting on raw water inlet is a bad idea.
Looks dirty and tired. I'd get someone competent to look at it and take an oil sample for analysis before buying.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

They used old acoustic ceiling tiles (possibly or even probably asbestos) to insulate the compartment.

Deranged...that was so funny but so...so true. Manatee crew rates it a perfect 10.
It’s a brave man who tackles a rebuild like this ...and a wealthy one.
Tip of the ice berg...that says it all.
Call the EPA and ask if it qualifies as a Superfund site.

I think the OP is yanking our chain...even a blind man can see this engine compartment is a joke.

Maybe someone is gifting him the boat? Or very low price. We don’t know the circumstances.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Thanks for all the advice. As I said, my main concern was water high enough to create major engine problems. I have arranged to have a mechanic check it out.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Looks like an easy project IMO. Prepare to spend some time though. I would want to go through everything.

I’ve seen a lot worse around the world though so this wouldn’t frighten me in the least. To each their own, some people would probably just walk away.

Good call on the marine engineer.
