Re: We bought our first yacht

A few months have gone by now since our purchase and we have done an excellent job of plowing cash into her
  • All the standing rigging has been replaced.
  • We have a new headsail.
  • We hauled out and replaced 12 of the 14 thru hulls and associated hardware. All skin fittings, gate valves and tail fittings were Trudesign products but also needed to purchase some bronze 45 degree bends as the Trudesign products are physically bigger and need different angles to work. We paid for some help with this step so that we could get it right. About 5 hours of extra labour.
  • The hull has been buffed and polished which really helped her look. She's now shiny as. Took me about 18 hours for both sides. Ran out of time in the yard to wax her but will do that soon.
  • We also repaired the lower rudder bearing issue and now have zero play which is fantastic.
  • Replaced the cutlass bearing and zero play there also now.
  • Stripped and cleaned the prop and applied Propspeed.
  • Installed a squid light.
  • Removed the old boat name from the hull and from all the documentation so she's ready for a rename if needed.
  • We antifouled without stripping it all the way to primer. We used International Awlcraft and hope we get 18 to 24 months out of that. We'll see how we go.

We're hoping that covers all the significant expected costs. We hope that an adequate maintenance schedule on the engine prevents any major disasters. We think the windlass will likely be the next big repair expense. The wife wants to invest in an assymetrical sail but Im suggesting we might not need that yet. See how we go.

I’m in the process of installing a furler for the asymmetrical, I expect to get much more use out of it. I hope you will join the 423 owners group that is very active with loads of expertise. You’ll find the group here: https://beneteau423.groups.io/g/main/topics

Congrats on your new baby!

This part of your post made me laugh, though. Isn't it weird what previous owners find "attractive"...?

I have a friend who looked at a Florida boat last month and it seemed to have been lived in - on the hard - by a guy who thought himself quite the Lothario. Beds had Tiger-motif coverlets and there were various wild-animal print cushions all over the place. All of it was topped off with a "Sailing makes me horny" sticker at the Nav Station! (Thanks for the warning, eh)

Fortunately, the boat was also in such bad shape my friend passed on it.

Congrats on your lovely new boat and hope you have fun making it your own. Remember to share some pictures when she's picture-worthy!

Warmly,
LittleWing77

Congratulations!

Now, please, just call her a "boat" and you're all set as a true sailor

Oh please... not this "only stuck up snobs would call their sailboat a Yacht" stuff again. In much of the world EVERY boat with a sail is called a yacht. Wikipedia thinks "A yacht is a sail or power vessel used for pleasure, cruising, or racing". No snobism is involved.

And I refer to our boat as a yacht, so I guess in your eyes I'm not a true sailor. With some effort, I can live with this...
