That is awesome! Always said if I ever hit the lottery, I will have a full scale replica of the CSS Alabama built, but with all the modern conveniences and use modern materials and make it look like the old ship.

Very Nice. Except the big stack, I suspect it would dirty the sails fairly quickly. Of course if it had a diesel with the exhaust out the back, it would solve all those problems, and you would have all the room that the coal bunkers take up for living space.

Yes, I would keep the stack as aesthetics only. Hadn't thought about the coal bunkers, but you're right, that would leave a lot of room. It was 220' long and 1050 tons displacement. 31ft beam, 17ft draft. Would be really cool sailing the world in something like that.

If I was going to do something that insane I would go for a full rigged clipper like Flying Cloud.

I went to the Oliver Hazard Perry site to learn more about her, and was very surprised to see that many of the photos on the site are not of the OHP, but of the three-masted topsail schooner "Mystic" that I have been crewing for the past three months. Both are steel, and both have three masts, but that's where the comparison ends.

Odd, looking at the new ship on the block, and seeing your own instead!

When I lived in Wilmington, Delaware, a local group interested in the history of Swedish colonization in the New World built a replica of the Kalmar Nyckel, Governor Peter Minuit’s flagship for the 1638 expedition that founded the colony of New Sweden, the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, at Fort Christina, in present-day Wilmington. The replica was launched there in 1997 or 1998, I forget which.

So the Oliver Hazard Perry would be the second tall ship built in the US in the last 100 years.

Actually, it was at least the FOURTH tall ship built in last 100 years: Godspeed, replica of ship that brought the first permanent English Colonists to North America, was built in Jamestown in 1984.
In the 1980's I skippered the replica HMS Dolfin out of San Diego: she had been built in Maine earlier in the '80s. BOth were wood and three-masted, and not schooners.
