Re: Slocum 43 vs. Pearson 424 vs. IP 38

The elephant in the room for me is the 4k hour engine in the IP. I know some will say no big deal. To me it says new engine. The Slocum pilot house windows will need to have blast barriers. The Bill Shaw boat is impressive with the tlc bestowed on it.

Slocum 43 vs. Pearson 424 vs. IP 38
[QUOTE=a64pilot;

Long before I had my chainplates replaced, back even when I was shopping I knew that it was $10K, and surprisingly, it was the one single repair / mod that increased the value of the boat to what it costs to have it done.

A guy might make some money on an IP then? There is one near me for sale that has gotten pretty cheap. You could put in the new chainplates yourself, buff it out etc and not lose money on a sailboat.
Maybe.
It requires a lot of furniture removal to be done correctly, but if your good with that (I’m not) then you May indeed make money, but it’s a risk of course, boats always are.

I’d say that any hours past 4000 on an old Yanmar are free hours, I’d consider it run out myself.

My 422 is the center cockpit version of the 424 and I agree with all the comments about the Pearsons. I also know Tor and his boat and if there is any used boat that is truly turn key it would be Silverheels.

Re: Slocum 43 vs. Pearson 424 vs. IP 38

The funny thing about an Emergency AD is the FAA has 90 days to decide if they are going to issue it, and what it’s scope is.
I used to use that to try to explain why Certifications took so long, if an Emergency took 90 days, how long do you think normal business takes?

Airworthiness Directive.
It’s an airplane thing, it’s a lot like an automobile recall, except it has to be done by Federal Law, and the factory isn’t paying for it, you are.
Very, very often the parts required to accomplish the AD are sole sourced, and an AD can be a real money maker.

If boats were held to the same standard as aircraft, even one chain plate failure would leave IP's tied to the dock until the proper repair was made by a certified mechanic.
