Looking for a V-Drive (Pearson 424)
Looking for any leads on a V-Drive for a Pearson 424.
The boat is in the midst of an unplanned re-power, and it turns out the housing on the V-Drive has apparently been repaired with epoxy.
I understand the same V-Drive was used on several Pearsons, the 365, 422, 424...
Any leads? Any suggestions?
Anyone have a spare laying around?

It would help if you told us what make and model engine is in your boat - also the brand of the VDrive ??
If it is a Westerbeke W60 -- then speak to Torrensens Marine Diesel Engines and Engine Parts - Universal, Volvo, Westerbeke, Yanmar, MASE

Re: Looking for a V-Drive (Pearson 424)
Yes, thanks. I did not have the model number.
It is a Walters RV-20 (2.05 :1).
The motor it was behind was a Westerbeke 50, but that is being replaced with a Yanmar.
Thanks,

Not sure if you are looking for a housing replacement only. But will the Walters mate to the new Yanmar?
If you are replacing the v drive completely, then consider a Kanzaki KM3V as an option. Mine is a 2.61, however, mated to a 3GM30F.
Might open up the options on sources for you.

In order to talk about the right VDrive gearbox - need to know the model etc of the Yanmar and its Measurements :- Length , width and height.
Also need to know the size of the space occupied by the Westerbeke and its Walters VDrive.
In addition you will need to ensure that the engine bearers will take the new engine, you will need to know where the propeller shaft's coupling will be once the new engine and drive are fitted.
Lots of measurements required

Housing?
Sometimes epoxy is not all bad. Or, a metal housing can be welded rather than replaced. How bad is it??

Yes, I have a spare Walter hanging around but it's here in Hawaii. Can send a photo if you like.
It is heavy but I could find out a parcel post rate for it. Give me your zip?
kind regards,

Thanks for your post, but you are not really right.
If I were planning a new 'from scratch' re-power I would agree... but the re-power was done around the existing install... Everything was planned around the existing V-Drive... so finding another one would have provided a solution.
Thanks,

Awesome John,
Thanks for the reply, but the yard convinced the owner to go a different route.... they are going with another V-drive and building new shafts and flanges... much more expensive but there will be a 'new' v-drive to go with the shiny new motor....
I hope this thread turns up in the case someone else is looking for one, they can contact you. Thanks for the post.
Fair winds.

Yes, if it were my boat I would likely have gone this route. These units are water cooled, and I suspect the cooling jacket was involved... BUT.
It turns out that others have removed the water cooling, and suffered no ill effects. If it were my boat, I would probably just weld it up, and go with it... but then I would likely have looked for another Westerbeke (like the one for sale on this forum right now).
Thanks for the post.

Re: Looking for a V-Drive (Pearson 424)
Also,
FWIW, I found another Walter RV-20 (2.05 :1). That had been rebuilt, and then removed from a Pearson 365 in Seattle. The owner was asking a very reasonable price, I would be happy to forward his contact info to anyone who is looking for one.
Thanks to all who replied to this thread, thanks for your help in trying to help me help the boats (new to cruising) owner. Threads like this one make the community great.
Peace, and fair winds to all.
