Re: N Atlantic rescue..

What fools.

I always say sail only in the right season.
As soon as I do people pop up and say 'except me! I'm a delivery skipper" or 'I'm a professional boat with charity and sponsor stickers on the side"

No. They are just fools.

Damn lucky there wasn't 14 dead.

Fools.

Re: N Atlantic rescue..

If this boat was involved in a "adventure cruise" or "offshore training" I wonder what the cost was to the participants (crew). Anyone know?

IF so, it seems they got lots of "adventure" for their fee. More than they bargained for...
_______________

As with any sinking or rescue, I think it is a good idea to consider what we can all learn from this example.

What lessons could be learned, in order to help others in the future?
______________

In one of the reports, I recall seeing some statement of explanation like (paraphrased here): "the rogue wave came from the opposite direction."
______________

If anyone sees a crew description of that rogue wave, please post it here. Surely there must have been crew on deck when it hit. So, I would expect some descriptions to be published.

Jan, Feb March if North off 40degrees you'll likely get your ass kicked in the Atlantic..
Odds 10/1 on..
As for fee's.. likely in the region of £2000>/person.

Re: N Atlantic rescue..

Guys, that's by no means an exceptionally large crew for a racing yacht of that size. There are some classes of 35' yacht that are raced with 10 crew. And for the longest time it was common to have a dozen on 45'ers. One only needs to think through how many crew it takes on a large boat in order to complete any evolution in order to see why you need a lot of hands onboard.

For regular racing you'd have:
- Bowman
- Mid-Bow
- Mastman
- Halyards
- Headsail/Spin trimmers Port & Starboard
- Headsail/Spin grinders Port & Starboard (1/side, 2/side if using coffee grinder driven winches)
- Main trimmer, probably with his own grinder
- Helmsman
- Runners & Tactics
- Navigator
- Rover or Sewer

Obviously the above is for racing where all stations need to be manned. But it's not too many crew by any means. And as noted, when you start splitting the crews into watch sections...

Besides, on a boat that size, it's common for a lot of jobs to require a few crew working together in order to do them. Simply due to the sheer weight of the gear, & the loads involved. I've been on 60'ers where the sails weighed 200lbs+ each! Some of them much more.
