Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

Home since 2003[emoji3531]. I have only met six other junks in years of tramping about the North Atlantic. I once anchored in Halifax with two other junks. It's been over a year since I last met another junk, although a friend sighted one on the other side of this island last week.(Martinique)Click image for larger version

Here, but nothing recent and all low quality. That will change one day hopefully.

Yes, I designed the rig and made the sail for Pango.

Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

My current junk, a three masted schooner with a pram bow. She sails well and with a shallow draft (2ft 6 inch) she can go just about anywhere.

The wheelhouse is really comfortable and makes a great entertaining area.

Sailorxyz that's a cool yacht. What is she built from? Is she a swing keel or is that a fixed draft?
Cheers

Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

why 3 masts?

Is the smallest one for balance? Can this boat maintain course with the rudder locked?

in nz i met anne sailing her junk rig.. because it had a fin keel it honestly pointed about as good as a full keel bermuda rig.. maybe better with more wind and worse with less? Since beating sucks anyway, and the hull shape has more to do with upwind performance I dont think the junk rig is so bad at beating.

I met shirley on her teak junk rig.. she claimed to put 4 layers of fiberglass over it... which makes some sense to seal it, but imagine adding all that weight to an already heavy (wooden) boat. Maybe perfect for a junk rig, just another slow monohull.

It seems like all the junk rigs I've encountered (including onyx when I was in mauritius) are limited to hull speed for the most part even though it was a hybrid wing sail design. I did surf a junk rigged kayak but this is only possible running in a strong wind.

The issue I have with junk rigs is for boats that generally exceed the wind speed as the apparent wind is always on the nose, the junk rig is not adequate since you really just need whatever points highest and the other advantages of the junk rig are great, but without the maximum pointing ability, the whole purpose and design of many lightweight multihulls is in question.

Re: Junk-Rigged Cruiser Thread and AMA

I have a Benford 34 junk schooner, currently located in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. My only contact with other junk sailors is through JRA - I rarely encounter another junk on the West Coast. I did meet Minimus II in Ensenada, a very interesting 4-masted junk rigged catamaran. Some notes about my adventures with Etoile du Sud can be found at:

She is a wood compost build. She has an unusual sponson type hull. The sponson part is pitch pine and the topsides 3/4 inch glassed ply. The deck and coachroof are also glassed ply.

She has a dagger board, draft is 6ft when it's dropped all the way down.

She sets 890 Sq.Ft. of sail and has a Gardiner 2LW engine.

All the junks you mention and there owners are friends.... We are all happy with our boats and would never go back to the "normal" rigs. Most junks are not fast as people don't tend to put them on fast hulls. You normally don't pick the junk rig because you want to go fast but because you want a safe and easily handled rig, which the junk rig delivers in spades...

That said, there is a chap in Sweden who races his junk rigged X99 against the standard X99's. He wins a lot of races, despite sailing single handed against crewed boats.

I and most of the junk sailors that I know have no interest in multihulls.... Pete Hill was an exception and even he, now has a monohull again.

"She is a wood compost build".

Freudian slip?

I also have a wood composite boat.

Did you not meet up with Taiko while she was in the are? Taiko is a Badger 37.... She is now back in New Zealand.

If you want to meet junks and junkies, you need to come over to New Zealand.

Well spotted! The wonders of spell checkers! Apart from the glass, she should compost quite well
