Generator, washer/dryer combo, dishwasher, icemaker, trash compactor, wine cooler, large freezer, all granite countertops in galley and vanity sinks. AC/reverse heat, corian in head, italian marble in head and shower.

I must admit it all looked really nice and was well integrated but for everyday life aboard a boat is it overkill?

No !
it's not too much if you have an unlimited repair budget and you never leave the dock .... or ... if you can afford to charter planes to fly in repair techs while at anchor.

For me - yes.

But everyone has different definitions of what is a need and a want. I think there is space to define a bare minimum for survival, ie x gallons of water, x calories per day. Outside of that there is a huge range of acceptable variables.

If i had to choose between sailing around the world in my 20s vs working minimum wage - then i could lose a lot of things.

If going without your washing machine and wine cooler means i leave 5 years sooner - I'm gone.

If all those things you listed mean i travel with my soul mate - then its justified.

So there isn't a one-size-fits all answer

For sure that is too much for 40 ft. Maybe works for 60 ft. Best washing machine is a home depot bucket.

Heck, I think my NEMA network with an everything integrated setup is too much.

I'll admit that built in air is a pretty nice thing.

I can’t see how they get that into 40 feet and still have any storage for anything else. I would keep the storage and lose the dishwasher and ice maker. :-)

To be honest, with all the gadgets we are installing, we buy ourselves a very small amount of additional comfort and never-ending and expensive maintenance. Where did KISS go in the modern sailing world?

Hard to take this seriously. I suppose it’s possible — with very deep pockets. But as BP says, this boat will either rarely leave the dock, or will travel on a tide of money.

I must admit, this kind of scenario leaves me confused. If luxury and work-saving devices are such a priority, then why choose a boat at all? And in this case, a relatively small one?? It’s a heck of a lot easier, and probably cheaper, to have all this and more on land.

On that boat, where do you sleep? Because all the bunks will be piled with clothes, tools, provisions etc as your lockers will be full of machinery. Oh and make sure the tools are not stuffed at the foot end of an aft berth. You’ll be using them a lot.

Complexity comes with a cost that is measured in time, frustration, and money. I have a 40’ boat without any of that stuff and still feel I spend more hours per week on maintenance than I would like, at least an hour per day if not more.

That is a lot for a 40 foot boat, but the cost of most of those appliances is not exorbitant, especially as many items are likely to be domestic rather than marine equipment. The extras would be great to have, but there is very large cost in time keeping a complex boat like this functioning. Even if someone else is doing the repairs, arranging technicians, ordering spare parts, warranty returns etc etc can easily become a serious part time job especially if the boat is continually cruising.

Then to power those appliances is going to need some significant generator time.

The biggest mistake I see new cruisers making is only considering the monetary cost of these appliances without factoring in the lifestyle cost.
