Bestevaer 49ST

We are planning a new boat. It will be a custom designed aluminium boat, which makes no economic sense, but why not

The Bestevaer range of yachts are designed by Gerard Dijkstra:
http://www.dykstra-na.nl

He originally designed the Bestevaer 53 as his personal boat to cruise mainly polar waters. He still owns and uses this boat.

As a spin off, KM, a Dutch builder produced several Bestevaer 53 yachts very similar to the original, but differing in finish and detail to suit the clients requirements. They gradually extended the range to two smaller versions (a 45 and 49) and several larger models (a 55, 60 66 and 76).

The website is here:
Our Yachts / KM Yachtbuilders

They are all based in the same overall design, but the company will produce anything that is technically feasible. Several have been built with lifting keels and one was even made with a larger beam and side decks for a wheelchair, as well as full access to the interior.

It is of course a great privedge to able to custom specify every aspect of a yacht, but also a rather daunting prospect as every decision has consequences. Consequently, I plan to pick the brains of the forum with a number of questions about the various options .

This is a photo of a completed 49, although our boat will differ in many details:

My all time favorite/dream boat! So jealous!

I saw Dykstras 18 in the Canaries along with Africa and the helicopter pilot's boat (can't remember the name of that one) , but that had a broken boom and was waiting for Seldom to ship one to Las Palmas.

What interior style are you going to do?

Matt

Those look beautiful! I have the K&M website stored as a bookmark.

I wonder if they could make the stern wider and flatter so it could surf?

I think everyone calls that boat the Helicopter Boat , but the the real name is Anabel.
For those that don't know, it was constructed for a helicopter pilot. I saw it being built and 'amazing' does not quite cover it. It does show K&M will build exactly what you want.

This is the switch panel at the helm:

Our boat will be much less complicated.

The interior style will be simple with solid timber and white finishes.

The white v-groove and mahogany shaker style wood is what we are doing in our aluminum boat.....well, cherry instead of mahogany. It looks so much better than the typical all plywood on most yachts.

Are you going to post build photos here?

We are debating the detail of interior finishes. If you have any photos of your boat please post them.

Our build will not happen for a little while yet. We are just in the design stage. Lots of decisions to make so I am hoping the forum can help, hence this introductory post.

When the actual build happens, there will be lots of photos.

I'm sitting in St. George's harbor in Bermuda right now admiring a lovely aluminum Swedish yacht which pulled in two days ago. I would love to be able to do an aluminum build. Their boat looks ideal to me.
Theyre anchored in front of me so I can't get a profile picture but the cockpit and stern are great.

Thanks. I love looking at other boats, particuarly aluminium models.
I think that is a Cigale (built by Ovni)

re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thanks for all the comments .

For those not familiar with aluminium, this gives some idea of the construction. This is the bow in a Bestevaer 49 being built. The plate thickness here will be 10mm for light ice (or light container ) reinforcement. The chain locker is well back from the bow. The start of the chain locker can just be seen in the bottom of the photo. Behind this is a waterproof bulkhead:

These are the fuel tanks and keel of a Bestevaer 53. Lots of inspection hatches to clean out the tanks. No keel bolts to worry about:

A 49 under construction. K&M achieve a beautifully fair finish without any filler. This is just the raw aluminium. It is hard to believe the compound curves of the hull start out life as individual flat sheets

These photos of the christening of a Bestevaer 49 have made me realise that for years I have been focusing on the wrong aspects of anchor performance.

The critical, and previously neglected factor, is the anchor's champagne breaking index (CBI). I anticipate long, heated discussions on CF on the relative merits of concave and convex designs.

I fully expect all the manufacturers to produce videos showing their design instantly smashing the bottle while the champagne simply bounces intact from rival models.
