If I was in the market for a nice, older, bluewater ...

Find the old boats that have been looked after and loved, they said ...

https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/199...nt-39-9152838/

That is one nice looking 27-yr-old sailboat.

NOTE: I'm not affiliated with the boat or owner ... just enjoy browsing YW for well maintained BW sailboats.

$169,000.

They should bring BlueStar back to Earth.

$40,000 if they are lucky.

Re: If I was in the market for a nice, older, bluewater ...

US$170K is almost a quarter of a million Canadian pesos.

US$40K is about 55K Canadia pesos.

Pre 2000, quality 39, 39, and 40 footers are asking about 35K to 40K Canadian pesos.

For a quarter milllion I could have a boat on the East and West Coasts, Scandinavia, Carribean and the Med,with money left over for plane tickets to enjoy them all in the same calendar year.

27 is hardly old for a GRP boat.

The valiant 40's are notorious for blister problems.

The asking price is not out of line according to soldboats.com
and it has a newer Beta vs. the old Westebekes in the others

Typical of sailboats from the 70s/80s/90s with osmosis and subsequent rotted cored hulls?

Then with the use of vinyl ester resin reducing the likelihood of osmotic blisters?

How about this gal? 1994 Nautor Swan 40.

https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/199...an-40-8946644/

New engine - 2020
New teak deck - 2019
Standing/running rigging - 2019
New water maker, new propeller and shaft, new batteries, new ray marine electronics, new bimini - 2019

Did the 90s Swan's hull's suffer from osmotic blisters?

What are her comp $$$?

Re: If I was in the market for a nice, older, bluewater ...

If you buy a forty footer for $40k you are likely paying the deposit as it will likely need a lot of work. Most of it will be hidden. Some of the things to look out for- new rigging (20K), new electrics (20k), new deck hardware ($20k), new sails (20k) including code zero, painting ($15k), galley (5k), internal mechanics like pumps($5k), reburbished motor or new ($20k), new running rigging ($5k), new feathering prop ($3K). The list gets big quick. Maybe hill repairs, timber teak trim etc, nav lights, vhf radium/aerial.
That swan looks like great value (discount off the ask)

The Valiant has Navtec rod rigging, depreciation rate for elecronics is about 30%/year (declining balance fromula, so essentially of no value after 5 years),sails with a few years of life left in them.

For insurance purposes, pre 2000 boats fall in the "not interested" category.

Newer hoses, newer batteries and lots of "love" don't add up to $170K.

Someone who has $170K of play money lying around probably can easily come up with $300K and buy new.

Pawnbrokers will not touch used boats which that is a good indication of their value.
