Re: I like this boat

I had a cruising friend with a sistership and it is a beautiful vessel. 'best feature for this one is having the teak decks removed. This is not a speedy "featherduster", but a solid "truck" that will stand up to challenges. The draft is a bit much for many of the areas that I liked to cruise,- Keys, Bahamas, SW Florida...,but everyone is faced with limits. The 55' bridge clearance is a great safety feature. This will allow passage to safe areas well inland for hurricane protection. 'and it is pretty!

Wouldn't be fast, but it would certainly be comfortable and safe.

Re: I like this boat

Any thoughts on what that boat might sell for (how much would you offer)?

Let’s hope not as I don’t think I can come up with that much

Re: I like this boat

So, why don’t you offer less?
Motor replacement, rig?, sails?, all potential points to justify why less offer, you can do it upfront or after survey.

What would others suggest?

Possibly he is watching…

I’m still setting up a viewing. If I am going to submit an offer I’ll offer what I can.

I’m not afraid to bounce a number off an owner. If they say no they say no.

Re: I like this boat

Pretty ridiculous to buy a boat in Florida to move as far North as where you are.

You haven't considered the tons of possible problems along the way plus that beast of a boat will be hard to handle docking or in any close quarters situation.

If you have engine problems along the way, then you have another whole set of problems to deal with.

Also strange it isn't on the Mahina Offshore Boat List unless it has to do with the shroud chainplates not attached to fiberglass knees like they are on my $2,000 Bristol 27.

Also, is the engine 43 years old like the boat?

Re: I like this boat

Thomm, after sleeping on it I agree a boat that far off will be coming home on a semi.

Too chicken to take a new to me boat on journey that far. Really don’t have the time either… it’s weeks either route by water.

Every boat I like is going to be a pig docking. I’m just a sucker for old heavy full keelers. Good news is I love using spring lines

Re: I like this boat

That list is kinda crazy…

Not one HC is an ocean cruiser? No babas? No CL offshores?

But several Catalinas?

As long as you plan to motor upwind on your old, heavy, and wide full keel boat you'll be fine, but if you ever see a 38' - 45' fin keel newer boat sailing upwind you might wish you had at least sailed on each type boat before a major purchase.

This from a post I made recently on another thread:

You can make a smaller boat work for you coastal sailing, but it helps if the wind and tide are right.

I was headed home one morning about 35 miles out and got in such a hurry I didn't free up some halyards that had tangled etc. so I used the jib only. Furler jammed also so I sailed with partial jib.

The wind was pretty strong gusting up to about 28-29 knots which on my boat would have been very hard to sail against.

On the way back, I sailed between two boats sailing North into the wind. One was an old school full keel boat that was sailing more off the wind, but the other was a fin keel boat that looked like it was sailing on rails.

Heeled over a bit but also sailing quite close to the wind and basically blasting upwind.

It was impressive to see.

Both boats were around 40'-45'.

Here is the day, but I missed recording those two boats. Autopilot has the helm.

Re: I like this boat

Every boat sails close hauled.

I can handle being 1/2 kt slower 2 degrees further off wind…
