Nice video thomm. I bet that was a lot more exciting in person than it comes off on video!

Dodger frame got broken from breaking waves about 1.5 hours earlier before I could turn DDW..... after a tanker passed and I was enough westward to line up with my creek.

I got soaked from breaking waves and did not have on my harness, Had to hold on to the winch to say onboard.

The worse part was the early part near the ocean and sailing closer to the wind. It was wind against a strong tide also.

Bow lights no longer worked due to the bow being underwater too much.

I had the wrong sail up with it's only reef in

The good news was I made the crossing of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in about 3 hours when at times it's taken 5 hours.

It’s well within budget, 1 day sail from home, and has a ton of recent upgrades. Like all boats it needs more work, but it’s got a lot going for it…

Charming boat in person too.
Strange that Hans Christians nor the Downeaster 38 aren't on the Mahina Offshore Boat List but a Pacific Seacraft 34 is as well as a Bristol 27, Bristol 33.3 etc.

Must be the construction.

You the man boatpoker!

Thomm i really would like to know why so many generally accepted blue water beasts are not on that list?

There are several boats omitted I feel like are more substantial offshore than many of the listed boats. How can several Catalinas make the cut, but no HCs…

Like you say there must be some funny design criteria omitting a lot of boats.

The Hans Christian 38 above appeared to have the chainplate attached to the "furniture" below unless there is wood attached/covering to a fiberglass knee.

I'm not boat building expert which is why I relied on the Mahina Site and the Atomvoyages Site before I put $2,000 into an old sailboat with paint peeling off the topsides that had been on the hard for 5 years

Re: I like this boat

The Cheoy Lee 41 had MASSIVE fiberglass tabs where the chain plates attach. The structure of that thing was super impressive. Also had a really great interior layout.

It’s not on the list for some reason either?

Plus wood is very strong. It seems funny to disqualify boats for structural wood if that’s the reason. Fiberglass can have issues too.

Tabs? Not knees? Encapsulated chainplates?

Fiberglass may have issues, but there aren't many wooden boats still out there after 50, 60, 70 years as compared to your average old fiberglass boat.

I owed 3 wooden boats as a teenager all about to fall apart.

Chainplate knee. They were huge. Chainplates were huge.

That boat was a beast. It was absolutely rock solid.

Re: I like this boat

Re chainplates; why does the hull appear to be deformed in the area of the chainplate bolts? All I'm suggesting is look closely, perhaps pull a bolt and inspect/feel the grp laminations (with a small right angle pick). Is the hull cored in that area and the core has been crushed??
Your purchase, your decision, just trying to be helpful.....

Re: I like this boat

In your first post, (green hull) look along the side of the boat and note the depression in the glass where the chainplate bolts are

Re: I like this boat

The Alajuela 38 made the list. That’s a pretty cool boat too.
