The British yachtsman Alex Thomson stood on board his damaged yacht, Hugo Boss, moored to the quayside in Guadeloupe this morning and told the assembled media that he did not deserve to win the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe.
He has been given a 24 hr. penalty which means he is not likely to be on the podium at all.

Re: Hugo Boss

So, Happy to say that Hugo Boss and Alex did make a podium finish as Vincent Riou finished 4th, just over 25 hrs. behind Alex. I think the race committee ruling was very fair to Alex as he could have been disqualified for using his engine.

Re: Hugo Boss

Totally sucks after a commanding lead but Alex had the right attitude afterwards when he commented "I shouldn't win if I run into Guadalupe."

Re: Hugo Boss

Lots of respect for Alex: one hell of sailor, and honest enough to take the blame when he screws up. I also remember one "interview" during the recent RTW race where he basically said he was scared, sailing at speed in the deep Southern ocean... how human is that?

Good man at sea and on the podium.

Jim

Admitting fear for a man who did a mast walk is truly something. On the Vendee Globe you really see the range of emotions that these skippers experience. The folks, men and women, who drive these boats show a lot of courage (not just the IMOCA).
