The new Hugo Boss was unveiled today. What a beast she is.

New Hugo Boss
I had the pleasure of sailing on the older Hugo Boss with Alex Thomson. Fantastic. Unbelievably light loads on the helm. Really fast. Fun person to sail with. Good humored and focused as you might imagine.

Re: New Hugo Boss
Wow. I bet that was a thrill of a lifetime. I still picture him in the southern ocean being filmed by the French Navy from a helicopter. Amazing boats.

Re: New Hugo Boss
Can you just copy and paste it so I don't have to go to %$&@book in the future, please? That site is pure cancer.
Regardless, what we're looking at isn't really a "boat" as much as it's just a giant windsurfing board....with foils. I had a surfboard with almost that exact shape back in the day for riding small east coast waves.
Those boats are awesome, however, they rely on speed to keep them upright in big water, which is fine for racing, but I bet they're going to try to incorporate a lot of the tech into the standard cruising market....which is bad.
See: hanging keels falling off cruising boats.

Re: New Hugo Boss
One of the posts on facebook was about the work that went into the hull. Then the next sentence "... but really the hull is going to play less and less a factor in the future as it won't be touching the water".
Racing doesn't equal cruising. I'm sure they'll try to figure out a way to get some features on marina princesses's to seperate the rich from their money but not a lot of the stuff there is practical for a cruising boat crewed by one or two old people, except maybe the electronics.

That won't stop the industry from trying to incorporate race design features into standard monohull design to try and lure people into buying a boat capable of higher speeds. It's getting harder and harder to find a boat that doesn't have a keel dangling down off the hull, just ready to ground into some mud, rock, or whale causing unknown stresses that could prove fatal later on down the seaway.

You're not looking far enough ahead of you.

Re: New Hugo Boss
Bringing up the founder's history is no less bizarre than this boat being in a cruising forum.

And yet, the forum pops up in Google search as:
Cruisers & Sailing Forums
Should we then stop writing and reading about America's Cup, VOR, VG, MiniTransat and Optimists?
Nay, mate.
BTW the point about the founder's story is 'unseamanlike' BUT interesting. Here I agree with your disgust for the nazis but have you stopped drinking Coke or taking Aspirin because of that?
(both companies were at times accused of being nazi collaborators)
I, for one, love the boat! Ran to youtube immediately and found 2 videos of the hull!

Yes.
Still the cruising bulb keel is not all that much a copy of the racing stuff as it is a reasonable development of the earlier general ideas of what makes a good boat. Just that the ideas materialized in racing in a more pronounced, extreme form (due to cost limitations in low end / mass cruising boats).
I have sailed both classic boats (we own a full keel boat) and extreme racing boats (some for racing, others for fun). I have zero doubt if we could afford cruising boats built in materials and to standards close to those of out and out racing, we would sail faster, safer and in better comfort.
It is a mixed blessing / curse situation. Nobody is ever pressed to buy a modern hull, today we are spoiled for options. And most of them are, imho, good.
