Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

One of the nicest boats I came across when looking for our present white boat was a beautiful deep red Moody. If the price had been a mere fifty thousand less would be owning it now.

however if you want to brighten / personalise, go for a big stick-on graphic...all the way down the side if you like. relatively cheap...can make statement, and you can change fairly easily

cheers,
I personally think this is a fantastic idea

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Ford wasn't dealing with dry rot in the sealing between the hull and interior that was promoted further by the warmth of a black hull.

Have anything you like in colour or pattern with a wrap. When you are bored with it you can get a hot air gun and take it off. Back to originally. A professional crew will wrap a decent sized yacht in one or two days. Transformational.

The tan color on my Islander doesn't add much to interior heating, but it is hugely difficult to match for touch ups and repairs.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

One of the reasons multi chine steel boats are often not painted white is that dark colors tend to hide buckling of hull plates whereas it shows very clearly with white.

Defensive, Insulting to funny. There’s a wealth of useful information to be had on this and other forums mainly by those who have actually done or are doing it, there’s also a fair amount of bs which needs to be exposed for what it is otherwise this and other forums loose all credibility.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

I painted mine Flag Blue 4 years ago, no problems wit being any hotter than any other, but if I was to do it again, I would do a vinyl wrap, cheaper and you can do anything you want with color or pattern.

A brightly painted Dean 365. She circumnavigated.

Inside too.

Dark blue is thought of as a luxury because most boat builders charged a fortune for the option. When I specced my westerly 41 the option of a blue hull would have added over 10% to the price so definitely didn't go for it, second in cost only to a full teak deck. Both options look amazing at boat shows but are much harder to live with.

Red fades in the sun more than any other colour, so that's worth thinking about, and greens and pale blues remind me of cheap boats. But then I don't even like the deep cream colours such as on an island packet, as they look like they're 40 years old sun damage boats when they're new...

Just google "traditional sailboat" and look at the images--you'll get plenty of ideas.
I'm with you. As far as a classy look - a dark green or dark blue hull, with a cream colored deck and cabin is hard to beat!

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Vinyl wrap it, then you can change your mind in a few years. Seems like it last about 6-10 years. I always like a seafoam or light mint green or turquoise surf which is a light blue. Vinyl wrap isn't very expensive and lasts about as long as new paint. Plus it is easier to repair and protects the gel coat underneath.
