First it indicates how old the boat is which is a big problem right off.

Then you are adding the extra weight with a totally fiberglassed boat.

Boats are enough trouble to maintain without getting an ancient totally fiberglassed built boat.

Think about the rest of the boat.

Not only is it a very inefficient sailing boat but being 60 plus years old it can have lots of problems besides what the previous owners may have done to it.

You obviously have not owned nor sailed one.

Properly designed and built they are excellent.

May be but they will not point with their short waterline and are hard to dock as most older boats had a full keel.

My boat is. Don't know which boat you are asking about.

Mine is 40 years old and in excellent condition. I've just done two Atlantic crossing and very glad I have such a solid boat.

It's also not particularly slow. Sure, not as fast as some modern designs. But I average around 7 knots cruising. I consider that good enough for what I need.

My boat does not have a short waterline. It points well and does not have a full keel.

Re: Classic Boats?

I’m asking? That was from Pearson archives.

Are they describing solid fiberglass decks?

Re: Classic Boats?

So the Pearson Invicta 38 has a top theroetical speed of 6.70 knots which is about .74 knots faster than my Bristol 27 if the Skipper knows how to sail it.

Whereas a new design of that size is 2-3 knots faster.

That's what it seems to say.

"Deck and cabin trunk molded fiberglass."

That tells you the boat is ancient, but you would already know that as they were build in the 1960's.

The boom is 16' !! Geez. That alone tells you the age.

Plus they only built 21 of them.

They built 1000 Pearson 30's.

Re: Classic Boats?

It felt very substantial and clean.

No nasty liners. No rotten wood. No weird smells. It seemed like a very durable method of construction.

Just needs hull blisters prepped and paint on hull and deck

Which is a fairly big deal…

I think you have you cables crossed on boats.

That being said, I'm not aware of Pearson's build solid fiberglass boats but maybe some of the early ones might have been.

The question of if a boat is solid fiberglass should not really be part of the equation. On older boats it's all about overall condition, something i believe you are trying to emphasize. I totally agree with that.

There are advantages and disadvantages to solid fiberglass boats - that becomes a question of an individual boat.

It would not be part of how I would assess a boat. Especially on older boats - as you said - overall condition is much more important.

I am not a fan of Cheoy Lee boats. Many reasons have already been stated. It is not because of their age. Although that does not help.

I'm going by his post number 88.

Btw my boat is a 1974 Bristol with zero blisters.

Good Old Boats are out there but harder to find these days.
