Cocos (Keeling) Islands

I was wondering how it is here. Just curious to see if it was worth the trip. If anyone has been there, let me know.

Hi,
Cocos Keeling is a long way from anywhere, halfway between the Chagos Archipelago and Australia at 12° 08.57' South x 96°51.8' East.
2 atols - 27 coral islands, 2 of which are inhabited , Home and West island.
Australian Customs and immigration a weather station.
Cruising boats stop there on their to and from Mauritius, Rodrigues and South Africa. There are no tourist facilities as such.

Some of the best snorkeling and diving I have ever experienced. The locals were very friendly back then, ('82), and I am sure that they still are.

Nice anchorage, they put the yachtties on their own island -- it has an australian pay phone and a thatch hut that cruisers decorate....great snorkeling, there is a bar, a couple small restaurants on the "main" island and some great surf...the people that live there built a hut down by one of the breaks that everyone just leaves their surfboard in, totally unlocked and open thought that was neat....

swam with a pod of dolphins in the lagoon around the anchorage for what seemed like forever, the entrance into the anchorage goes through a pass in the reef and dolphins tend to "guide" new boats in, if you see a new boat coming in put on the ol' mask and fins and get after it...

all that being said it IS a long way from anywhere -- which is both good and bad, if you're doing the Indian Ocean route from Darwin west it's a nice stop on the way to Rodrigues
