Nor over any mapped underwater volcano!

You have been warned.

Unless of course you need some hot water or your grill is out of gas.

I can say for sure I wont be headed to the Honiara, Solomon islands anytime again. I would stay away. unless of course you want to export 'betel nut' and get the world addicted to a disgusting habit. I also didn't see many places with A/C and the bars are few and far between.

If your criteria for where to sail are A/C and bars, just stay at home.

personally I find the Solomons and the very fine folk who live there infinitely preferable to gum chewing budweiser bar belching star spanglers.
Perhaps you strayed a little too far from home?

Re: Where NOT to Sail.

He he.

We sailed by a smoking pile of ash, I think somewhere in the Tonga.

There was also a similar if not so big eruption in Canary Islands not too long ago.

A local fisherman got caught there.

Re: Where NOT to Sail.

Also the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Friends of ours are sail there every summer logging the migration patterns of stellar sea lions. I believe it was last year at anchor during a night watch the boat rocked for a couple of minutes. The crew on watch and everyone else went up on deck but couldn't find anything to justify it. They all stayed up the rest of the night.

Next morning the deck is covered with ash, the sea is covered with ash, and not too far away is a smoke plume coming up from the surface. They didn't investigate, they got out of there fast, but they figure a volcano must have broken the surface causing enough displacement of the water to rock them.

Scary stuff.
