It's never a good idea to have a mechanical device locked away where it is inaccessible for repairs when they're needed (and believe me, they will be).

...and not all cats have their main halyard running back to the cabin top. I have chosen to have mine running down to the mast winch. One of the reasons, as you have pointed out is the excess clutter of lines at the helm. Also, if your main halyard runs to the cabin top then probably all of the reefing lines have to run there too. My preference is to keep it simple.
