What It Has Cost Us To Cruise - Last 4 Yrs

always a popular subject so thought we would share

we sail a 2001 jeanneau ds40 that we bought new in 2003 - we try to keep her updated and great shape

below is what it cost us on average for 9 mons 2009, 12 mons 2011 & 2012 and 10 mons 2012
it includes all costs including boat insurance but we do not carry medical, trips back to usa and costs while in usa, mail service, wx routing, family emergenices - everything
we also try to do at least one major upgrade on the boat each year -

we try not to stay in marinas unless we feel it is not safe to not do so, our insurance tells us we have to, or we leave the boat to go to the usa

we do not live extravant nor do we skimp our on things -

2009 - $2,415/mo 12.5% boat, 10% dockage, 9% insurance, 8%food, 7% diesel, customs 1.6%, 1% cruising guides, transportation 6%

2010 - $3,441/mo 55%boat (lots of upgrades) dockage 3%,insurance 4%.food 6%,diesel 4%, customs 1%, crusing guides 3%, transportat 4%

2011 - $2,289/mo 18%boat, dockage 11%, insurance 6%,food 7%, diesel 5%,customs 6%, cruising guides 6%, medical 10%, transportat 7%

2012 - $2,461 23% boat, dockage 13% (marina trinidad), insurance 14% (2 handed person for possible crossing), food 12%, diesel 3%, customs 4%, cruising guides 2%, alcohol 7%, transportat 2%

just our thoughts and opinions

LOL! The wife and I were just remarking on both of those things...

Probably a typical feature of cruising budgets, by year three the booze budget exceeds the fuel budget...

Does the cost listed for boat include boat payments or its that simply for upkeep and repairs?

Re: What It Has Cost Us To Cruise - Last 4 Yrs

we paid the boat off when we sold the house in fla before we left -
so the boat costs are upgrades, parts, repairs, and supplies
upgrades are replacing things that work with better stuff
parts are things that replace broken or items that are need replacing
repairs are other people working on the boat
supplies are the disposable items

Dumb question: What am I missing? The percentages don't add up to 100%. Don't mean to be picky, just trying to figure it out. Nice information... thanks.

Confused how can the yearly percent not add up to 100 percent? I'm missing something I know.

Re: What It Has Cost Us To Cruise - Last 4 Yrs

lots of little stuff did not get in here such as propane ave .1, clothing ave 1.5, entertainment 1.2, gifts, laundry, galley stuff, gasoline, fishing, sightseeing, in 2012 a new dingy 4, wx service with chris parker, hotel bills, mail service -- just a lot of little stuff

Re: What It Has Cost Us To Cruise - Last 4 Yrs

Thanks for posting that, Chuck.

Just a few questions:
- are you happy, overall with your cruising experience? By this, I'm asking for hindsight: on reflection, would you have spent more to improve the experience, or do you regret any spending that didn't make a positive difference?
- Are you happy with those figures for budgeting your future cruising, or are you planning some changes to change the budget?

Re: What It Has Cost Us To Cruise - Last 4 Yrs

lake- effect -- we are pretty happy with what we are doing - i am not sure what we would do differently if we had more budget and by the way we both are putting money away from our pensions so we have more to spend
we both perfer anchoring out but at times it just does make sense - we eat well, get to see a lot of places we have been, keep the boat in really good shape, and we are enjoying our cruising life,
NOW the big question is next year -- if we head across the pond what will the cost be - we have heard anywhere from you can not afford it (some who have told us that have not been there) to you can do it on about what you spend now - so we will just have to see

Another question for you Chuck - where were you cruising while incurring these expenses? Med? Carib? USA?

Re: What It Has Cost Us To Cruise - Last 4 Yrs

POH -- 2009 we did the northern bahamas and up the east coast to maine
2010 we did all the bahamas and up to the cheaspeake for massive upgrades
2011 we went from fla to mexico, belieze, guatelama, bay isl, panama, colombia and back to panama
2012 we started in panama, then across to jamaica,dr,pr, usvi, bvi,st martins, and down to trinidad - but i blew out a knee in st lucia so we skipped a lot of islands on the way down to rest the knee (torn meniscus - working again)

you can see our travels if you go to www.shiptrak.org and put in our call sign ki4sry and press see all

It may not be the cruising - I suspect 3 years of boat ownership - LOL...

Chuckr - thanks for sharing some real world data.
