“... All four people were rescued and transferred to Redondo Beach Fire personnel for medical evaluation, officials said.

Two were "relatively uninjured" but were treated for mild hypothermia. The other two had some abrasions and scrapes -- one with a dislocated shoulder and the other with back injuries, Rappaport said...”

Re: Small yacht capsize and crashes into Redondo pier

Who said a rudder needs a flow to control the bloody thing?

BTW nice to see a proof that it takes only a minor wave to capsize any small boat.

Very happy to know the crew are fine as it man sure looked bad.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Small yacht capsize and crashes into Redondo pier

Senseless waste due to ignorance or lack of knowledge/experience. The errors/mistakes by that crew are so many....

When the frame opens they have plenty of sea room to reach across the wind into that harbor but not with a flogging partially furled head-sail only. (Behind them one can see other j-boats reaching along under control with mains set and some with jibs.) With only the jib, lee helm overwhelmed any ability to sail forward, complicated by crewman on the leeward rail and, in one frame, the helmsman with the rudder shoved all the way to leeward doing nothing but acting as a brake. At that point the boat was akin to a leaf driven by the wind. Frankly, it's amazing that no one was killed.

Whomever has lost his/her boat and, knowing SoCal, will get a nice bill for the "debris removal" from the beach. Hopefully he/she has some kind of insurance...

They were that close in because the pier borders the channel into the harbor. You have to leave it to starboard as you round the breakwater and turn to port. It's about a 700' gap that you need to negotiate. It would appear that they were entering the harbor and about to tack up into the channel when stuff went pear shaped.

They have their racing jib up so assume they were racing, and it looks like the sheet(s) got fouled near the mast and someone was working to free it. Helmsman keeps the boat off the wind which is sort of odd, if you're trying to free a line in circumstances like that. I'm assuming that they thought they could get it sorted in time and then it was too late.

Re: Small yacht capsize and crashes into Redondo pier

What a relief that everyone is ok all things considered. We have had a pretty good swell running lately and it's been windy. It's true they were not ready to enter the channel entrance with the sail problems, no drive and no auxilliary. And as we know, waves come in sets, and it looks like they were trying get in on the small set, but got caught, and he wasn't familiar with the hazard there. To be fair, I would guess we have all showed poor judgement at some point. But this is a good wake-up call, in case we needed it.
