Re: Over and out

Stu-
[sic] is used less pedantically to mean "Yes, we know that word or phrase might not be right, but we're letting that stand"
As in, maybe that's a *grammar* error, maybe it isn't, but we're calling it a grammar problem, deal with it to the best of your ability.

And before you worry about "Over and out", worry about why the BBC refer to NASA as Nasa, often pronounce it as Nassau, and folks in Florida refer to the "Golf of Mexico" when they're not talking about balls and sticks. There's bigger fish to fry.

Proper or not, the redundancy of "Over and out" is easily recognizable and intelligible. So you let it slide. Like Tom Brokaw's heavy accent.

This is the first time ever that I've seen "[sic]" used other than in its common sense within a quotation.

I cannot find any reference to support your "less pedantic" meaning or usage.

Did you cringe before or after you yelled at the kids to get off your lawn?

People complain too much.

Re: Over and out

Below are the PROWORD definitions as listed in the Coast Guard Telecommunications Manual. Over and Out shall never be used together. As someone posted earlier, they contradict each other. Every transmission is required to end with one of these prowords. (paraphrasing) Use of the prowords let others know that it is 1) Other stations turn to reply back at you 2) that this conversation is completed 3) you will continue your transmission in a couple of seconds or 4) you will continue your transmission after a delay.

OUT : Use to end a transmission when no reply is required or expected.
OVER : Use to end a transmission when a response is required. Go ahead and transmit your reply
WAIT : I must pause for a few seconds.
WAIT - OUT : I must pause for longer than a few seconds.

In the same tradition of meaningless trivia....

No, there was no "roger roger" before the robot was sucked into the engine.

However, the robots DID say it quite a bit in the later 2008 Clone Wars. Lucas ripped it off from the 1980 movie Airplane, in which the writers, ZAZ, used it in a modified but ripped-off 1938 Abbot and Costello:"Who's on First" style scene, which was ripped off from Wheeler and Woolsey's version in 1930, which was ripped off from burlesque acts in 1905...

No Lawn, I live on a boat

No complaint either, just a cringe.

Re: Over and out

As far as I can tell, the direct responses to my original question, "Am I the only one that cringes..." has been 50:50 with 10 saying yes and 10 saying no. I'm not sure if this surprises me or not - I didn't think about that aspect before the post - although had I done so I think I may have expected a higher percentage to respond with 'yes'. Perhaps that's because I am a bit pedantic about it?

What has surprised me, though, is the difference of opinion regarding what the actual prowords mean, and to an extent, those that choose, for one reason or another, to ignore or flaunt them regardless. I don't have a thought-out opinion on that aspect yet, other than it's been an unintentional, but interesting, outcome.

Thanks for all the responses.
