Naming your boat

So in Canada you are unable to use a name that is already registered, one name per boat only....so I am told. Firstly how to I find out if the name I have choosen is already taken, what site am I able to search? I've been looking and have not been successful. I expect the name that my boat currently has is taken already so I need to be prepared with another name. I'm still waiting for the USCG to deregister in the US so I can re-register in Canada, so its a waiting game for now but I would like to be prepared for when the naming comes into play. Any advice is appreciated.

We bought a new boat last fall and in the USA we sent our off shore documents into the coast guard the first of Nov and received the final paper work in April this year, so it may be a waite. I think in the US names can be the same as other boats in a different home port so we have to show the home port in 4 inch letters under the 10 inch high name. Good luck in picking a new name.

Canadian Register of Vessels contains the names, ownership details, mortgage details and records of all registered vessels for each Port of Registry.

How many "grandpa's wet dream"s are there in the US. Is there a way to find out in the US if there are other boats named the same except for home port.

There are USCG documented boats with both the same boat name and home port. They will have different documentation numbers and the boat descriptions and owners will most likely be different, however. Home port doesn't have to be the boat's actual home port or even be near navigable waters.

You can add a number to the name. That is why I once sailed a boat named "Ariel XII".

The boat I have been using for instruction is Sea Biscuit II.

Since you are going offshore, registration makes more sense than licensing which allows you to use any name you wish.
