Lifeline Netting Installation

We purchased some lifeline net and need to get it installed. What we are having a problem with is getting the squares "square." I don't understand the process to attach the top and bottom without distorting the net. The net has squares that are about 1.5" on a side. Is there a formula for how often to tie the borders and at what spacing to maintain the squares? I can get rhomboids, parallelograms, etc. but it seems to be very difficult to get them squared up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this helps at all, but I just spent the afternoon doing the same thing...As far as I can tell there is not an obvious formula. I secured mine loosely to the top lifeline, then slid things around until they were fairly symmetrical. Then I secured the bottom of the netting to the toe-line I had run along the base of the stanchions, also loosely. Then I adjusted things again and tightened up the top. One more adjustment and tightened up the bottom.

Yeah... it's a length by width thing... usually ends up being parallelograms to get the right tension. unless you're cutting the width also...? Confusing exercise isnt it!

Anyone have a recommendation on where to purchase lifeline netting. I read there are two different kinds that can make the difference in a nice tight fit or loose and saggy.

West has stuff that looks pretty cheap. Defender by the yard look ok...but not sure.

There are two kinds. One you by per units of rail, the other you buy 41.42% longer. The former hangs in squares, the latter in kicked squares:

Good stuff, squares.

Whichever type you get: hang each end, then hang the mid-length, then work by hanging each half of each part till you are happy with how they are about the stanchions. And that's that.

I just bought netting from Defender. I haven't installed it yet but it looks a bit sturdier than the netting I got from West Marine a while ago. I've also come across some places that I think will custom make the netting for you, but haven't tried them:

I like the nylon as opposed to the poly. It comes in black or white. It is usually the kind where you apply the %. a little hard to figure but basically the shorter the "fence height" the longer it stretches. Available at Fisheries Supply, Seattle. They mail order also. I like the Dacron 1/8 cord as you mentioned... real strong stuff and not too effected by UV.

Black or white netting? Mimsy, why did you pick black? It looks good in the pictures.
My husband is partial to black, I though the white would blend better. but Ceol Mor black netting pics look great. Hmmm

The black does not obstruct your vision as much as the white does. It was a decision based on functionality, not aesthetics.

We picked black for the extra UV resistance. The Schnauzer doesn't care what color it is.

Mimsy, thanks for the fisheries link. I haven't ordered the netting, but by chance I checked their hatch selection and they had our bomar 100 series on clearance for 900. So we saved about 400 dollars so thanks again.

What you do is put them on with a few zipties first. They slide along the lifelines and help you place it well.

Do you have a perforated toe rail? If not, what are you securing the bottom to?

I even have lifelines on my gates. I made frames for the netting out of 1/4" pvc. If your gate is wide, as mine are, put a t-connection in the middle for a center support.
