Jerry can covers--mesh bottom, open bottom, top flap?

I am making some jerry can covers.

What design has worked for you?

I want any water that gets in them to be able to drain out.

Open bottom?

Mesh bottom?

Grommets at each corner?

Put them in a bag with a flap top?

I plan to use a couple grommets in the handle area so I can run a line through it to secure it to the boat.

Thanks for your input.

Open bottom. When you measure for girth, do it full and/or leave more room than you expect to need, plastic jerry cans swell when full and when hot.

No grommets

I simply make a square box that will slip over the top, then I cut two straight slits in the fabric one either side of the handle, and put an overlock stitch down the slits. I lash the jerry can down against my fuel board, works great.

Flightlead's way is very similar the way we've done it. How I did it was to make a slit where the middle of the handle would be, with a "V" on each end [>--------<, open it, and topstitch the now rectangular opening] All you need is access to the handle. If it is to be stowed above decks, it would help to have a strop around the middle, to help keep it tight to the board, if you use a securing board. Wherever it is stowed, you'll want to secure it from getting loose, whether it is water or fuel. (chocks on deck to stop it from sliding, but still tied down? add pad eyes?)

I made mine out of webbing. Snug fit slipping on empty and tighten up once filled. Velcro straps over the top (3). Open bottom and sewn in loops on the bottom corners. They have triple layer (overlapping) Velcro straps to secure them to the SS bar wire lashes to the rigging. I had to add lashing to the bottoms to snug it all up. Works well.
