Re: FREE, or close to free!

Bruce Roberts 36, steel sailboat, located in Iroquois Ontario (Canada). Asking $3000 (cdn) (about $2200 usd) with reasonable offers considered. Estate sale.

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details...earch%20Alerts

This could be the boat someone here has been waiting for.

Iroquois is located on the St Lawrence River. There are no locks between Iroquois and Lake Ontario. This opens the possibility of going to Oswego NY to enter the Erie Canal to the Hudson river ending in New York City and the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, the St Lawrence Seaway begins at Iroquois and leads east to the Atlantic Ocean.

From the ad:

I have for sale a 1982 Bruce Roberts design 36' sailboat ( Solitude ) it has a 11' beam a 5'4" Draught a all steel pilot house and includes all masts and all sails ( stay sail, jib, Genoa, main, mizzen main, spinnaker ). Blue prints and engineering drawings included. 2 anchors hydraulic steering gear and props- Manganese Bronze. The motor is a Nissan inboard 4 cylinder diesel 70 hp with a fixed galvanized 45 gallon tank. This boat sailed the great lakes and well finished for vessel type. Has full kitchen, bathroom, bunk and Captains bedrooms. Comes with a cradle. Was appraised in August 2019 at $24,000.00. Boat is in dry dock in Iroquois On and needs some cosmetic work and hull painted etc. With a bit of work this boat could be worth a lot more and sail for many more years. This is a estate sale and we are open to a decent offer. Motivated seller. First picture is of the boat back in the 80's and the other pictures are of it's present condition. Would be interested in a trade, what do you have to trade? Thanks.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Sounds sketchy for sure.

Say I went down early in the morning, dollar in hand.

How could I assure myself I'm not buying a pandora's box / can of worms.

Title, registration

assurance against liens, debts to mechanic / professionals etc?

Re: FREE, or close to free!

I thought that only applied to federally documented boats?

it has a title it can be searched . Just like a land title or car title.
Just on cars most people don't do a search.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

If the seller does not have a title, or other solid proof of ownership, I guess not worth pursuing?

there are many ways of doing things like that that don't require the title to be presented .

The hin and the registration numbers are direct ties to the title and owner.

This one sounds to me like they are about to be locked to the dock and thereby responsible for at least the next w months fees till the marina sells the boat.

Call the owners .

At $5K it is nowhere close to free. And considering it's 55 years old and this:
"Just needs some TLC
hull is in great condition, interior is in good shape just needs some work.
Diesel engine needs some work ."

not sure if it's a good deal at $0.

How do your get "running universal engine" from posted "diesel needs some work"? In craigslist-speak "needs some work" means engine needs an overhaul. "Engine recently started/ran" usually means "needs some work".

Agree. But that's not the issue for someone who is looking for a cheap boat to sail now. And as a project boat, which it looks from the pics on c-list, at $5K with an iffy engine it's way overpriced.

Please explain this:

"In no hurry to sell
Open to trades , make me a offer.
Interested in another boat or vehicle ."

Unless this is a quick flip of a boat the seller got next to free and wants to either make some $ or get a better boat in exchange, I am sceptical as to the seller's motives to sell.
