Re: East Coast US Sights

Sailorboy1, there are plenty of wonderful places to go, and I am in the NYC area. I will PM you my contact info and if you decide to spend a few days here I will take you around the city if interested.

In the meantime, here are a few interesting places I've enjoyed. This is by no means anywhere near a complete list!

Little Creek, VA The Cutty Sark. It's a dive bar with slips that first opened in 1948. I don't think it's been remodeled since. The food is good including one special called the Garbage Can, defined as the works with toast. The slips in Little Creek are well protected and it is a great place to start sailing up the Chesapeake. This place will take care of dinner and breakfast, and afterwards there are some very nice and unique neighbourhoods that will give you a nice stroll/bike ride for a couple of hours.

Annopolis. I know, I know. But yes, it's a great overnight stop or even a one day stop. Use the city marina since it is inexpensive and there is a three dollar, maybe four dollar water taxi that takes you around. Two places that come to mind are Docks, a semi-dive bar with great crab cakes. The other is Pusser’s Caribbean Grille. They have quite a collection of impressive ship models including the 1/3 scale model of the African Queen that was used for the white water scenes in the movie of the same name. Depending upon whether you make it just an over night stop or add a few hours, there is shopping and the Naval Academy.

NYC. Call me! Too much to list here but the Intrepid Museum and the South Street Seaport are some of the many notable sites.

Westport Connecticut. Tavern on Main. The building is from the late 18th century or very early 19th century. They marinate the lamb and pork chops for five days! The chocolate deserts are great too. A fun overnight stop.

Fire Island, NY on the south shore of Long Island. Thin water but a great twenty four hours. Unique barrier island with no cars allowed, excellent beaches, super relaxing. Who knows, you may end up staying for an extra day.

Block Island or Montauk. Both good choices but remember, you don't have to suffer the tyranny of OR when you can have the genius of AND!

Narragansett Bay and Buzzard's Bay. Great sailing and Newport, R.I. is close by. Oh yes, there two chandleries that have great consignment shops, The Ships Store (Shop) and Newport Nautical (Newport Nautical Supply).

Re: East Coast US Sights

Depends if you want to some historical stuff, some inland bus / hire car rides, or just nice water views in calm anchorages.

The Highlights for us under a foreign flag (heading north from Florida) were
1. Savannah (Thunderbolt marina and hired a car) - a historic town
2. Charleston (historic Town), Aircraft Carrier, easy port to enter.
3. Cape Look Out near Beaufort NC - good wind and wave protection, nice long ocean beaches, dinghy exploration, fishing, wild horses in the dunes, big turtles
4. Chesapeake : (most rivers have nice little offshoot creeks)
a. Tangier Island - a quirky town, Venice like.
b. Solomons Is - festive town, museum, good protection in creeks
b. St Michael's - nice town, marine museum
c. Annapolis - great town, plenty of dinghy docks, Navy Academy, Sail Boat show in early October,
5 Cape May - NJ - good stop off point, nice beaches, touristy
6 Atlantic city - easy entry port - Casinos (if you like them), touristy, concerts on the beach
7. Navigating New York City, Statue of Liberty, East River spectacular city perspective in nice weather
8. Port Washington - friendly mooring place, close to groceries, well protected
9. Various harbors along Long Island
10. Newport Rhode Island, home of 12m Americas cup, sailing mecca (old school)
11 Martha's Vinyard, Nantuckett - worth a visit, touristy.
12. Onset is a good well protected anchorage to do New England and islands

That's as far north as we got last year.

There are plenty of places in between.
The downside - most of these ports I would not swim in, the only place to make water is offshore, marinas get expensive north of Delaware Bay, mid summer bugs and heat are an issue from Georgia to New Jersey. The worst are green headed biting flies in New Jersey.

In summer the wind is fickle and light air sailing is common. Fog is a common hazard further north.

Thumbs up Re: East Coast US Sights

Hi sailorboy 1!
One stop you cannot miss-Beaufort SC! So much to see and do there. Plan on a week, rent a car also add Charleston & Savannah to your list.
Paris island Marine Corps Museum, Hunting Island ,downtown carriage ride, National Cemetery and many other places. In Charleston don’t miss Patriots Point you can take a slip right next door and catch water taxi to downtown, Fort Sumter, also add Fourt Moultrie to this list! Some great restruants off Shenn creek and downtown! Savannah has so much plus Tybee Island, also holds the distinctive honor of being one of the few places which had an atom bomb dropped on it in the late 50’s!(bomb never found)!
Happy travels & fair winds!

No that's in the Bahamas, Thunderball Grotto across from Staniel Cay. Went there last year

Go to Cobb’s Marina at Little Creak near Norfolk VA. Great Staff and while there you can go to a couple of maritime museums and there is also a wonderful zoo in Norfolk. I loved seeing the Red Pandas.

Re: East Coast US Sights

In post # 13 Bumpman makes reference to my post about Northport, Maine. I was actually referencing village of Northport on Long island....but totally agree with Bumpman on
Bellfast, Northport, Bayside Maine and all of Penobscot bay area adding Rockport,
Camden, Rockland, Owlshead and so much more . Just watch out for those belted cows
grazing on the seaside pastures. You will know one when you see one.
Talking about cows...watch for the long horn cattle grazing seaside on Nashawena Island
(island just north of Cuttyhunk) of the Elisabethian Islands.
In addition at random...
Upper Narragansett bay...
Greenwich bay and Bristol, home of the Herreshoff Museum (really not to be missed if anywhere close)
Fishers Island and Fishers Island sound area...
Mystic seaport is expensive to stay, but fees include addmission to seaport for all crew and any visitors who may visit you while there, and when seaport closes at 5-6 p.m.
you have entire village to yourself. Village is approx. 100 old buildings moved to site from all New England as well as whaling/fishing ships and others, and full blown sawmill and very serious carpentry going on.
also close by as earlier posted is Stonington and
Watch Hill which has an old carousel and don't miss the fried zucchini at the
Olympian tea room right in center of small town across from the WHYC.
From Stonington follow narrow channel to WH then can anchor in bay and short
walk across Napatree and swim in ocean.
If in/around Pt. Judith pond at western end of Naragensett bay
go to Matunuck Oyster house/bar, they grow/harvest there own oysters right in pond
outside restaurant.
Also pond/ harbor of refuge good stop if you don't want to go up into Nar bay.

Re: East Coast US Sights

I'll comment, in no particular order, on a few spots in my immediate local area. These are all places where walking from the harborfront is practical.

North of Cape Cod, Provincetown is a fascinating art colony. Go with an open mind and the people watching is phenomenal. Just outside of town are world class beaches.

If you head from P-Town to Gloucester the edge of Stellwagen bank offers lots of whale watching in season.

Downtown Boston has marinas. One of them has moorings. A bit pricey, but fun in the City. Lots of boat traffic. It is a busy place.High speed ferries, low speed ferries, whale watch boats, freighters,LNG tankers, tugs and barges, cruise ships, small sailboats, big sailboats, power boaters and more. The approach to Logan airport is low over the harbor at times. You can see the planes on your radar.

Gloucester is very much a working fishing port. Holding can be poor, but the Harbormaster maintains visitors moorings. It's a very interesting place. If you are there during St Peter's Fiesta (June 27-July 1, 2018) the greasy pole competition is not to be missed. You get the best view from a boat. You won't be alone. Or bored.

Marblehead is my home port. Marblehead usually has guest moorings that the local yacht clubs control. They are member's private moorings but when the member is away the clubs rent them out. Marblehead has a very large concentration of private homes from the 1600s to 1800s. My house is from 1822 for example. There are a few good restaurants as well as six yacht clubs.

Salem Mass, next to Marblehead has a long maritime history and excellent food an a great museum, the Peabody-Essex. The witchcraft has been reduced to moneymaking tourist stuff. The city is worth a visit.

I was surprised it took to 16 replies to get to Newport...
The Herreshoff museum is in Bristol RI. It is about 45 minutes by car but has a lovely anchorage. Adorable little town with the US's oldest 4th of July parade.

Year before last I visited Damariscotta. Nice small town, waaay up the river.

Go through the reversing falls and up the St John river.

Visit Winter Harbor on Vinalhaven.

Stop in Cutler Maine.

Check out Passamaquoddy Bay

Overnight in Seal Cove, Grand Manan. The tide runs about 20 feet there.

Don't forget Roque Island.

Hike on Isle Au Haut and pick wild berries.

I'm just beginning after decades in the Northeast.

When you stop in Stamford, CT, go up the road, take two rights and a left, then walk a half mile, third house on the right.

My friends Bob & Trudi might have no clue who you are, but when you mention my name they will be sure to throw you right out.

You ain't seen nuttin' yet........
