That was a meal for four... scale down spices etc for 1 or 2...
Whats expensive... intial outlay for dried herbs/spices around £20...
but they'll last you three months at least... depending how much you like spicey food... Chilli con Carne etc.. in which case you'll carry those...
or do you live on processed crap.... like 'Uncle Ben's'...
Also most of them are benifical to your health... look it up...
Adding 1/2 T'spoon Tumeric to your rice when you boil it makes it yellow and boosts your anti toxins... also great for treating sores/ulcers...
1/4 T'spoon Cayanne mixed with 1/2 cup Olive oil makes a great massage oil for strained muscles/aches... why buy 'Deep Heat'...
Cheap as hell from my viewpoint
Grow your own Coriander/Parsley...
eggs, rice and tomato puree... how expensive are they
Oh... and cooking time is 20mins for the lot...

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

This has become a sub thread, "Cruising budget on $500/month and still having fun" (just not paying someone to create the fun for you). =)
A budget is simply a matter of finding your comfort zone, not spending more money than you are comfortably able to do and not so barebones/survivalist that that is uncomfortable. As "living within your means" is cheaper on the water than on land it is possible to live more comfortably for the same or lower cost. I have been just barely squeaking by for some time, in my figures 50% on my income is "land ties" and 20-30% is refitting the boat so I can leave. That means I will basically have 4 times the amount available than I have had to barely squeak by in a cheaper environment.

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

What do you do when you get there? How do you know what's going on inland and what sites to see on the cheap. A bus ride won't cost very much but how do you know where to go?

No... just make your scalp yellow and hot....
For hair you need a paste of ground Coconut Husk mixed with Coconut Cream and Aloe Vera with a dash of ground Cumin and ground dried Neem leaves.....
Basically one shaves ones head and apply's the paste to their scalp and leaves it for 1hr then rinse off with cold water... do not use warmer than 5c...
Repeat nightly for the next 6mths... keeping the hair to a No1 max.. this give the roots time to strengthen and restores the chemicals to their normal state encouraging fresh root growth...

If you kept that a secret you could afford to cruise on a lot more than 500 a month.

A lot of big cities have "What's Going On" type of magazines, newspapers or booklets for free. You can also be adventurous. Sometimes it works out, other times you just got some exercise walking around. The bus driver or some local on the bus might have some good ideas as well.

You can also ask the internet and plan a few things that you would like to see or do, yet still be flexible if something else presents itself.

I have traveled around New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and many US cities and never really felt that I wasn't doing enough.

I'm not sure how different it would be in the Caribbean vs Florida though. I know how to find the library, free wi-fi at McDonald's, public bathrooms, grocery stores, and other things to make it feel like you know where you are in the USA/Canada and other modern 'countries'. I haven't spent any time in the Caribbean yet (which is a problem I need to fix) to know if I could live my cheap lifestyle there.

I also have an appointment to donate blood tomorrow. It is a free way for me to get a new t-shirt and some snacks...yeah, it also helps people who need blood.

While I'm sure it is good, and if I am sailing along on a catamaran at 5 knots with plenty of time...and nothing else to do... it would take a lot more practice and that is cooking at a whole different level. Let alone the inventory and stocking, and what to do with remaining ingredients (not unsolvable, but you would have to plan)

Instant Mashed Potatoes Taste Test - Yahoo! Shopping

I've never had instant mash potatoes, but they won out, are cheaper, and are healthier than the ones I buy it looks like.

Add ham, cheese, bacon, onions, ketchup, gravy, peas or any other combination.

I have also picked my own fruit at fruit farms (cheaper than at a store), and have collected free food along the bike paths and in the woods before.

I'm not sure what customs would say about growing your own herbs on-board, or about brewing your own liquor on board.

Rice and veggies are pretty cheap and good with flavoring.

Pasta and marinara sauce with a can of corn is great.

Chili beans and crackers are good.

Fruit, ice, protein powder, and fruit juice in a blender is a nice morning drink.

If you catch some fish, there is a lot you can do with that to add it to the above meals.

I'm sure there are cookbooks for cruisers.

And if you help people, they often like to share the food they are eating.
