Can This Be Repaired?

Can this be repaired by bending the top piece back into alignment using a vice, or does the guide need to be replaced? Will bending it soften the metal?

If it is cast, then don't try to bend it. On the other hand, if it's stamped steel or forged (hard to tell from the pic) you should be able to straighten it.

It's stamped bronze or maybe it's a casting with heavy machining around the ring.

Give it a shot.

Lewmar uses cast bronze right? It's not very brittle cause it bent, so bend it back. You would probably get 2-3 bends before it cracked.

It will not self-tail as it is.

Order the new part for the winch to replace it.

Then, if you want to have a go at bending it back, do so. If it does not break in the attempt (which I think it will), use it and keep the spare for when it does fail permanently.

I wonder how that happened? any video of it?

Bend it back, then order the new part. That's what I did with mine.

Replace it. Even if it bends back it will be weakened.

on my Lewmar 48's I bent a the same piece..
happened when the tail got caught in the winch loops..
I found them for about $90 on defender.
I tried to fix it..neededa big vise and bar. but didn;t have those
handy at the time.. bought new..
going to try to straighten with better tools. if it straightens..I'll keep it
as a spare..
a 19in adjustable wrench and a concrete dock weren't enough

Huge sail, not enough wraps on a very strong electric winch.

What do you have to loose. Try bending it back. If it works great if not buy a new one and don’t do what you did again

Replace it. The part is cheap. The same thing happened to us when a line got tangled somehow on itself. I was expecting a boat buck and it was something like 50$.
