An historical perspective:
This thread/discussion makes my heart sing. When I started as an ASA instructor in 1985, the organization was no sure thing. It is now. Pretty cool!

Years ago, sailing schools used to discuss the improbable: sail "around the world" one week at a time. These days it can be done. It is certainly true that one learns to be a sailor by going sailing and learning in one's home waters has the greatest benefit. At the same time, ASA certification allows one to fly to some of the most spectacular sailing venues and go for a cruise. Pretty cool.

I have no financial interest in the ASA or any school... just in case this sounds a bit like a promotion.
