Because someone started going on about crowbars and stuff. You can secure your boat out well enough to chase drunken teenagers away so that they will move on to a boat that's less secure. Someone who is absolutely determined to get into your boat at any cost may well find a way, but it is probably possible to keep out the great majority of those who would try to break into your home, boat, car, etc.

That was the point. Someone was suggesting that nothing would be 100% effective, and I conceded the point. At the same time, that doesn't mean we shouldn't do enough that we feel comfortable and reasonably safe.

Been cruising the Caribbean for 3 years, with wife and 2 children from Florida to Venezuela and not even once locked the boat and never had problem. Took my boat single handed from Grenada to Venezuela and had a great time. When I got to Medregal in Venezuela and reached my wife on skype in our home town, Kelowna, Britiish Columbia she told be that half an hour later ,in the cafe where she was with her friend there was a shoot out with automatic weapons and 60 rounds of ammunition was fired (hell's angels turf war).Been to carnivals in Grenada and Dominica,marching along with another 20 thousand people where they were serving free rum and coke, no cup in sight, no problems, the best behaving people. Here in BC every time we have an event where the bus is served, there are always more cups than participants. Can't wait to go back to the Caribbean and be safe again.

No doubt, crime is like a lightning strike. You can go your whole life without every getting one, but if you do, it really messes up your day.

And, like lightning, you can do everything wrong and not get hit, or do everything right, and still get hit.

That doesn't mean you don't try and avoid it happening.

I've been in law enforcement for over 25years with only two shooting incidents. Both times, it happened when I least expected it, where I was in lots and lots of situations where I expected it and nothing happened.

Why would you intuit that ?

I would surmise that she means your security is up to you.

And there are a multitude of items that one may use in ones "hand", besides a gun. Ball bats, tire irons, iron skillets, golf clubs, to name just a few. Being a old guy though I prefer a Kimber .45cal as it's much less tiring, and easier to clean.
