Wintering in northern Europe

I'm looking for recommendations for liveaboard wintering of a trawler in northern Europe. My preference would be towards the mildest climate, best shoreside amenities and least costly. Dockside with good shore power is a must.

Mildest climate and good shore side amenities are more important than cost, at least within reason. English is my only fluent language but I can usually get by in most of the northern European countries.

Some of the obvious choices would be south eastern England, Holland, northern France, possibly even Paris. I've been to London and Paris in the winter and the weather didn't seem that bad but those were short stays and in the comfort of hotels.

I think you are stretching the definition of "northern Europe"

Dockhead (poster on this forum) spends the winter on the dock in Cowes. Great town good connections in to london etc. Not sure aobut cost - but you can PM him.

Typical english weather, meaning no frost, but you'll not be wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

You haven't noted just how far north you want to go, Copenhagen is a good choice, lot of facilites and in water cost in the winter is generally very low. If this interests you send me a PM and I'll send you some links to marinas around here. You might not like the weather, short daylight and usually rain and cloudy, but seldom below zero

Generally you'll that most people in northern europe speak excellent english, you'll not have a language problem

I quite agree but Wayne b had not replied when I had asked so I just made a suggestern for me aliverboard in nth winter is something I wouldn't do

how about Germany, Kiel area ( Kiel Canal )?
within last few years the climate tends milder - only few days minus degrees.
Last winter less than 5mm snow...

Here in the South West of the Netherlands, Zeeland, we have a rather mild climate. And the Marina's are all clean and well equipped with showers and washing machines. Although most of the Marina's don't have permanent power supplies.

The tarifs for winter berths are very low. And the risks of damage due to ice forming are in the seawater are very low. Most of the inlands waterways, lakes and the IJsselmeer are fresh water and have more a "land-climate" and lower temperatures.

Language I doubt would be a problem in northern Europe. Most seem to be bilingual with English as a second language.

Like others, I'm not sure what's meant by Northern Europe. Baltic is cold (even frozen, in some parts). North Sea cold and very stormy. English Channel is warm enough to sail all year. Cheap berthing in winter (Nov. through March). Superb infrastructure on UK South Coast, but N. France even cheaper and very nice, with better food and wine , but less infrastructure and more remote.

I spend winters in Cowes. 2 hours door to door to London, lovely town, all possible services. Nor do I just sit in the dock; you can sail year round (in between the storms ) and the cruising grounds are superb. There's a fair amount of decent weather in winter and very rarely below freezing. Palm trees grow in Southampton and lemons in the Isles of Scilly despite the high latitude - influence of the warm Gulf Stream.

Cherbourg is another good place, if you prefer France, or further South, say to Brest, if you want a little more warmth.

We wintered in the southern Netherlands (Yacht Haven Atlantica) one winter on the hard. Many boats were left in the water, but to my knowledge no one lived aboard.
Last winter we left the boat in Wisbech Marina in the water, 150 miles north of London; there were live-aboards there. Wisbech is an interesting town with a vibrant history that has fallen on hard times; it is convenient as a jumping off point to explore England, Wales and Scotland. It also was the most reasonably priced Marina we located.
We were happy with both locations, but left the boat and returned to the States for the winter both years.
There are issues, both for the individuals living aboard in Schengen countries (90 days in, then a 90 day exclusion) and for the boat (18 months with a possible 6 month extension). Great Briton is not a signatorie to Schengen.
