Turkey boat numbers

We haven’t been out to Europe from NZ for 2.5 years due to covid and we are shocked at the massive increase of boats and particularly charter boats in Ionian Greece. Is Turkey going the same way or is it still easy to get a relatively easy anchorage. Also someone tried to tell us the president was closing down the wee tavernas in the bays. Is this happening. We haven’t sailed in Turkey since 2016. What changes and will we be disappointed

Re: Turkey boat numbers

We have just bought our second boat in Leros Greece. Its about 20 miles from Turkey and plan to be there in 2 months. WE ARE hoping that the ed of season will see a decline in flotilla sailing. Did notice that the winter season in the Sea of Cortez saw an increase of boats that was almost unbearable. That was a consequence of Covid and the many areas to the south and West being closed or uncertain as to staying open.

we plan to be in Turkey in late September and October for sure. Will let you know what we find. Like small remote spots rather than mega scenes.

Re: Turkey boat numbers

Hello, Turkish coasts have not changed much in recent years. Last year, quite a lot of area in the pine forests in the western Mediterranean region was burned in the fires that lasted for a month. There was a fire on the Datça peninsula this year, but it was extinguished in 2 days. The marinas are quite full as there is no tax on yachts bought from abroad and brought to Turkey. For this reason, prices of around $120-200/m2 for annual contracts strain the owners' budget. The ones in the southern Aegean and western Mediterranean regions of the bays are usually quite full during the summer months due to the slightly lighter winds in these regions. The same is not the case in the bays in the Aegean region due to the strong breezes blowing in summer. Restaurants and other facilities continue at shores and other cities as well as it was in the past.

Re: Turkey boat numbers

Hi Annabel,

Right now the charter business is at top for a number of reasons; the russians who cannot travel to anywhere in Europe can come here, strong devaluation of local currency against hard currencies and also because Turkey has one of the best sailing coast in Med, friendly people, etc.. The bays are not fully booked , yoıu can always find nice spots almost everywhere. However the marina prices have increased substantially as there aren't enough berths for the increasing number of demand.

Cheers

Re: Turkey boat numbers

I think that you will see a large increase of boats in Turkyie. Post Brexit there are now more people playing the Schengen shuffle. This will also change when Croatia becomes Schengen. There are fewer places to get out. Tunisia and Albania are easy escapes but have limited services for yachts. Albania is increasing what they can but there is little investment. Montenegro has facilities and Cyprus is increasing theirs too. But Turkyie has a big attraction.

The main increase in the Ionian has been big cats. A relatively small smaller consumes huge harbour resources.
