Since the November 2021 delivery Model 3 Teslas in Australia, manufactured in China, have all had LFP. I have heard that the US made models hadn't switched.

Pretty sure they don't mean salt water.

Later,

Well if they did they clearly didn’t base the safety statements in e-13 on any LFp testing

At METSTRADE several LFP vendors expressed severe annoyance with E-13

We had many of the same conversations at METS and it may have been the repetitiveness of these questions they were getting

No the vendors I talked too we’re not happy that E-13 dumped all forms of Lithium together. The METS LFP Vendors were particularly annoyed.

No, this article was simply next on my list-to-read before supper.

BTW, I know an experienced, competent long-distance solo sailor who has NO electrics on board. None.

The French sailing magazine, “Voiles et Voiliers” (Sails and Sailboats) has a great section where a thorough investigation is done by the reporters on incidents like this. If they have a featured article on and event, it receives the same scrutiny. “Ça Vous etes Arrivé” is the column. Looking forward to their post race coverage.

Believe it or not, that's what he did.

He's a shipwright, and knows his stuff.

When I said 'no electrics', I was wrong. I'd forgotten he's taken to using a pair of those small garden LED-PV lights on a spike - which he wedges into his sheet winches star-holes - as anchor lights. Simple....

This sort of thing:

And before anyone sounds off, his boat is 22' LOA, and he knows the ColRegs.

It may be simple, but it’s illegal. So no engine and the only electric is a couple of solar garden lights. Sounds like a ticking time bomb to me.

"It may be simple, but it’s illegal."

Oh, dear. Someone 'sounded off'. What some might call a 'premature ejaculation'.......

I DID give the hint in #132, and I refer the Honourable Gentleman to 'Annex 1, Section 9.d.i '

You 'n I might consider it not wise, but illegal it is NOT.

You are making a really important point here, but you have the terminology messed up and it risks further confusing people rather than clarifying.

LiFePO4, aka LFP, are a form of Lithium Ion battery, just like all the others. LFP does not stand aside from LithiumIon - it is a subset of Lithium Ion.

Saying that LFP is better than Lithium Ion is like saying AGM batteries are better than lead acid. AGM batteries ARE lead acid batteries, just a specific kind. Or it's like saying that sedans are better than cars. Sedans ARE cars, just a specific kind.

Correct ways to express what you mean, which is very important to communicate, would be:

- Tesla has recently changed to LFP batteries because it's the safest type of lithium ion battery

- LFP is the only type of Lithion Ion battery suitable for use on a boat because it is so much safer than other types of lithium ion batteries.

and lots and lots of others.
