Knowledgeable Sailor / Mechanic - Space Coast

I’m looking to bring on a couple knowledgeable individuals on my boat inspection / survey that are unbiased to help me inspect this boat that I am considering purchasing. This is in addition to an accredited surveyor that I am planning on hiring.

Surveys usually have to be done for financing etc. Surveyors are a sketchy lot. Some are great, many are not. It's a crap shoot if you don't know the industry well. I always recommend once you find that boat you seem to be set on to pay for a couple of hours of the real professionals time. Marine electrician, Marine diesel mechanic, etc. to get a real reading on the condition of a boat. Money well spent. Any one of these professionals can save you and your wallet far better than most surveyors. I've seen it too many times where people buy a boat and then spend tens of thousands of unpredictable dollars fixing what the surveyor said works. Just because the lights come on does not mean the wiring is done correctly.

This is spot on. I’ve just recently come across a new boat owner who’s engine misses WOT speed by 600-700rpm. Survey doesn’t mention this, as well as describes the location of and the operating speed of the generator incorrectly.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I am going to hire a handful of people to do the inspections mentioned.
