Greece (Lefkas)

Hi, I'm just about to buy a 40' Jenneau live aboard, currently on the hard in Lefkas. I'm new to all of this, gonna need all the help I can get:-

1. Costs (I'm on a tight budget)
2. Rules & Regs, do's and dont's
3. Getting my stuff shipped out there as we are no longer in the EU (30-40% tax!!!!!)
4. My list is 100 items long .... lets say I'm absolutely clueless!!!

H E L P !!!!

Re: Greece (Lefkas)

We bought our Moody 425 in Lefkas 10 years ago...it was a good experience. We bought from a British broker and we used a British surveyor....being Canadian we tend to trust the British law systems and the Brits.
Can't help you on taxes as we didn't pay any. I'm sure there are some Brits that can chime in. Good luck, wonderful little island, we liked it there. First place we ever saw a family of 5 on a motor scooter.

Re: Greece (Lefkas)

I have owned a 35 ft yacht in the Ionion for the last 10 years.

1. Cost: ~£3000 /PA

~£2200 storage on the hard with 2 launches PA, £400 insurance
There are cheaper and rougher storage options than the 3 main yards at Preveza and Lefkas Marina.

2. Rules: SSR registration is cheap, ETAPI cruising tax. ~35 euro/month. I think goes to 120/month if 12 meters or above.

3. Stuff shipped is a right pain. Used to be easy at £60 to UPS a 30kg box
but now post Brexit lots of problems.

4. Info. there is facebook group "Friends of Lefkas Marina"
and ybw.com Liveaboard forum have info to search through.
Then feel free to ask specific questions.

Lefkas marina ( where I’m based ) is expensive so confirm that’s where you want to berth. Annuals for your boat( ie in water ) will be about 6K euros ( the alternative is to winter on the hard with no guaranteed berth anywhere , it works for some but the place is very crowded and long term cheap in water moorings are very scare )

Secondly you need to factor in the monthly cruising tax 8 euros per metre per month for your boat

Yes you risk vat on anything you ship out fron the U.K. Greek vat is 24 percent. If you drive to Greece with the gear it’s unlikely you’ll get checked.

Remember unless you have residency you are now limited to 90 days out of 180 in Greece as a U.K. person

Presumably the boat is EU VAT paid , she will retain that status as long as she never leaves EU waters. Registration in an EU is better then U.K. registry in that regard but can be awkward to access for a U.K. resident.

You will need a basic sailing competency ( ICC or day skipper and a vhf cert ) though in practice they are never asked for

Insurance on the boat will be needed if you stay in marinas

One benefit of Brexit , is you can buy a vat NOT paid boat and keep it in Greece for 18 months , resetting that 18 months is a simple over night to a non eu country , Albania being conveniently close
