Re: Plan on Selling the Ugly Duckling Soon.

Such a beautiful boat.. Who's the designer? Rod Stephens? German Frers? Lines are so similar to classic Swans I grew up to love. If I was on a market for another boat I would grab this beauty without a hesitation.
Are you sure you want to sell? I have a slipped disc in the lower back and I can cope with if I do just moderate work, don't overstress it, and remember always to maintain proper posture. I believe if you sell it you won't be able to find another one as good.. Just saying..

Sorry to hear (well, read) about your declining health, Del, best of luck with the sale, although I doubt you'll need it.

I believe it was Rod Stephens. One of reasons for its name (ugly duckling) is because it has the same hull as an old Swan 40. While hauled out, sided by side you can't tell the difference. I rebuilt the cockpit to resemble the Swans but to my own specs.

I don't really want to sell, but it's the best thing for the boat. Maintaining is becoming hard. She's still in pretty good shape, so a little here and there will keep her up to seaworthyness and beauty.

I had a discectomy at L5-6 nine years ago, but I have arthritis setting in, which puts pressure on the sciatic nerves. This cold weather is not helping. I have a house in PI which I skipped this winter to buy and set up some summer property. I have friends with boats, so I'll just crew for a day or two if they want some company.

Thanks,
Del

This is so generous and so important. I bought an Alberg 35 from a friend in great condition three years ago. He lives in the marina and has done a wonderful, amazing job of teaching me how to do things. He's always been there for us, and for the boat as I went through the first stumbling steps. I'm not sure we could have held onto the boat without him.

Yeah, it'll be like a daughter getting married. Ya hate to see her go but you'll still be looking out for her until you know the marriage is doing well! And then you still would like to know how she's doing now and then.

The pictures don't show it but I suspect it still has the trip-over main traveler in the center of the cockpit, and a tiller. And I suspect the sails are all stretched out. I'd talk'm down to 18k!

I agree with Del 10000%
You must see Del's boat to appreciate it, there is NO comparison to the ebay boat.

Re: Plan on Selling the Ugly Duckling Soon.

I've been led to believe that bluewater boats should have a full keel and a supported rudder (attached to keel or skeg). But Ugly Duckling has a deep fin with spade rudder. As a Swan hull, I'd expect it to be super strong, but is it suitable for blue water?

BTW, absolutely love the layout below...tons of bunks, usable space, and storage...NICE!

Re: Plan on Selling the Ugly Duckling Soon.

Hi, Del,

There is a kind of surgery, called spinal decompression surgery, that cleans out the arthritic growths where the nerves exit the vertebrae. I don't know if it can be done for the sciatic nerve or not, but perhaps that would be a fix for your body. I have had the surgery, over 8 years ago, and I am still pain free. It might be worth a consultation for you, with a neurosurgeon or a spine specialist.

Good luck, Del.

Choate also durning these years made an off shore boat with just different interior and cockpit. The Swan with the same hull is an off shore boat.

For a younger/stronger crew on an IOR is OK, but yeah a full keel is more steady in a rough sea. Fin keel boats will fall off a tall wave causing a pounding effect, but harmless. Ya just have to slow down until the pounding stops. Choate hulls were over built, with some minor defects, which I've corrected on mine.

The rudder shaft on a Choate is made with a 4" SS pipe sch 40. The rudder and shaft weighs around 200#. And supported full length from hull to deck, no gap, nothing to break lose. I installed a couple grease fittings top and bottom. As well, put in rollers under the quadrant. A major up grade!

FYI - I finally checked the actual hours today and it's at 561. Winter is finally starting to break. It's finally in the 50s F now.

Re: Plan on Selling the Ugly Duckling Soon.

It's official. I've put a sign on it @ $45k. I'm in good enough shape now that I could do a day sail on her. Going to put an ad in Craig's list today.

GOTO the first 4 posts to see details. A 6' x 12' trailer full of supplies tools and spare parts will go along with it too. The trailer itself, not included.

Re: Plan on Selling the Ugly Duckling Soon.

Thought I had it sold but I think it was going for a resale, and the guys Surveyor nit picked his way through every inch of the hull. 🤡 He tried to talk me down 15K. Of course it's not perfect! It's 37 YO. 🤔 But try to buy a newer one with as much new gear/rig as this. And a hull as strong!

I could sell it for parts for as much as I'm asking. Any one want ALL the parts?
