For Sale: 1985 Hallberg-Rassy 352 w/ 53hp Yanmar 360hrs

The HR build coupled with a fool-proof, overpowered 53hp Yanmar diesel with under 360hrs equates to a very capable, ready-to-go cruising vessel. She has been extensively refit over the past 2 years, teak decks have been removed and she has since sailed 500nm testing her upgrades in the Keys & Tortugas.

We are listing her below market value with hopes of her next owners being able to cruise her right away. We never anticipated selling her but have come to realize our needs are best met in a smaller sailboat. For the both of us, she is plenty roomy and offers the living space of a boat in the 40-45ft range with her generous queen-sized berth in the aft cabin & double berth up forward. We have already found our next boat and need to sell our HR before buying it, so she is priced to sell. We are happy to help sail her to her new home or stay on board for a few days to go over all the systems. She won’t last long!

It is. Yea spoiler alert the next boat is smaller but there are plenty more tricks up our sleeve for the next boat that you won't know about for a little bit

Thank you for the kind words. She's been a lot of work but we've learned more than we ever could've imagined from her. We use SUP-RAX stand up paddle storage bars to store the porta-bote. We like the setup a lot and will be doing something similar on the next boat

Wow after all that sweat equity! Keep in mind a smaller boat has smaller tanks, less storage, and is SLLOOOWWWEEEER. I started out on a 20'. Moved up to a 30 which we sailed from BC Canada down to San Diego. Sold it and lived aboard a Morgan OI41 for a few years then lived aboard a Hunter 54 in Hawaii. My ideal size would now be around 40ft. Best compromise. Hope you do not regret your downsizing decision.

We won't. We've thought this through and have sailed the past 500nm thinking on it even more. We are both very committed to sustainability and want to do an electric engine. That's primarily our reasoning for going smaller coupled with the fact we have 4 months of stores on board presently and still have an empty v-berth. Our new boat has been known to hit the same speeds our HR does. She's a small boat with the sail area of a much bigger boat

Or perhaps you are getting a boat for free to sail like the La Vagabonde folks got a cat? From the outside this is not making a lot of sense, but then again not much is making a lot of sense to me these days.

This made me laugh. We're doing the polar opposite of what La Vagabonde did. It's called we've run out of money and now after sailing the past 1000nm, know a pocket cruiser better fits our needs while extending our kitty. Our episodes are 2 months behind real-time currently.

Aren't you done with the pricey items on your refit? I just don't think a smaller boat is going is going to stretch the dollars much further. If you've got a boat that is paid for and already refit, selling it and buying another doesn't seem a good way to make a larger bank account.

I've just finished watching your current videos. Abandon comfort is one of the few channels I watched most of the videos, I only skipped some road trip videos.

That would be my guess as well. In our experience, a 35-footer with a complete refit is just about the perfect size for a young couple. Keep the boat for another year and experience sailing longer distances and living out of marinas for a longer time. Then you will appreciate the bigger tankage and storage space. This is something completely different from living in a marina or short sails for a couple of days.

When starting with a completely refitted boat my guess would be that while sailing e.g. the caribbean a 35 footer is not much more expensive than a 25 footer, because food prices differ extremely between the islands and marinas are to expensive regardless of the size. If you fill your now empty forecabin with food in Martinique and eat and drink the stuff in the Grenadines or Grenada, this will easily make a price difference of several hundred bucks saved. And it's like that not only in the caribbean but in many places all over the world.

A lot of cruisers stop from time to time and get jobs to fill the kitty. I'm sure you've thought of this but think about it again. It might make a lot more sense than selling your boat and buying a smaller (cheaper) one and starting the re-fit all over again.

You guys should watch some of their videos. They have thought it through every way imaginable. Not sure I agree with their plans but I am pretty sure they aren't making a rash decision. Good on them for admitting their "mistake" and taking a different tack.

But they sure did put a lot of sweat equity into the Hallberg-Rassy.
