New Alternator install problem

Hi all!

Hoping the CF forum can help with new install of highAmp alternator to a MasterVolt III - Alternator is from APS 28V/185Amp, Isolated ground for external regulation, N-TYPE. I think we just smoked the regulator after changing the wiring (see attached).

Any help, comments, etc. would help

Cheers all and thanks for being there

Re: New Alternator install problem

From the Alpha iii pro nstallation manual, there is a warning about non-Mastervolt alternators having a connection between the negative field connection and ground (case). AFAIK, that is the definition of an N type alternator.

Also, the voltage sense wire should got to the + terminal of the battery, not the alternator.

Re: New Alternator install problem

Looking through the APS doco it appears to me that their alternators are isolated field (i.e. either n-type or p-type depending how you wire them) and that you have the wiring correct.

What's happening? Does the field turn on as confirmed by voltage and current present in the field circuit and a magnetic pull at the center of the back of the alternator case? Does the field turn on if you ground the field terminal at the regulator?
