If it's the arrangement I am familiar with, you will have two or four 12V batteries up there in the bow. Under normal conditions, they are all wired in parallel through the relay box up there with them, and therefore are charged as your
service and
engine start batteries are, through dedicated charge splitters for each
battery bank (from
engine alternator, and from
shore power, depending if you are running or plugged in).
When you hit the
windlass button, the relays in the relay box change the connection from parallel to series. So if you have two batteries, you end up with 2 x 12V = 24V. If you have four batteries, you end up with two lots of 2 x 12V = 24V, and those two pairs are then paralleled to give you double the
current capacity.
It is the same system as used with 24V bow thrusters on 12V
boats.
