Lagoon 410

Anyone had any experience with the Lagoon 410. How does it perform? Whats it like in 20 knots? Any design quirks to be aware of in this model?

Thanks

TP

Re: Lagoon 410

Hi TP,

Solid build with Lagoon quality interior.... chartered one from Sunsail, when I first took it out It seemed to be quite heavy... but we actually won the 2010 H-R @ Sint Maarten with it....and grew kind of fond of it :-)

Re: Lagoon 410

Hi, I have sailed on a Lagoon 410 S2 quite a lot, short trips on the Baltic Sea and long passages on the Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean.

I would say that unless you are trying to go anywhere to windward direction when the wind and the waves pick up, then the 410's sailing abilities are very good except in very light air.

In moderate wave conditions the motion and the waves slamming in between the hulls can get pretty loud, scary and uncomfortable and you hear lots of squeaky sounds, which is apparently normal. The construction is strong though, no worries about it breaking apart.

In 40+ knots of wind and big waves, especially going to windward, you can sometimes feel like someone were hitting the bridgedeck with a sledgehammer from underneath. I have seen the saloon table come loose from the floor from the waves slamming from beneath. Sleeping in cabins is difficult, with the waves slamming again to the angular shapes of the hull, which are to accommodate the width of the sleeping bunks. So in big waves it can be more uncomfortable than the newer "gullwing" designs.

If the boat has Yanmar engines, it is worth checking the engine mounts carefully and make sure that they are Yanmar originals, not the Lagoon factory lookalikes! The original factory mounts break very easily and consequently the saildrive main seal will break and begin to leak!

About design quirks.. Some things that come to mind, they are many little annoying things not related to sailing, but overall finishing quality issues that have occured on the boat I have sailed on, for example:

1) the seat cushions in the saloon do not stay in place, they need some better attachment system
2) the steering seat backrest needs some better thought (also the seat material should better be non water absorbing instead of the original canvas)
3) with the boom out, the mainsheet rubs against the cockpit bimini roof aft edge and eventually breaks it
4) due to the design of the bimini roof, with some rain, the cockpit is a very wet place, unless you have some useable side attatchments to the cockpit roof
5) the cockpit roof stainless steel carcasse, where it is screwed o the roof, can begin to leak over time
6) cockpit floor drains (the sealant) can over time begin to leak water into the aft cabins below, behind the walls of the cabin and under the mattresses
7) the standing headroom down below in the hulls is only about 185 cm (less than Lagoon 380, which must have at least 190 cm or more)
8) on port tack with a lot of wind and rain, you are quite exposed at the steering station. Same applies with the sun, there is no adequate shade from the sun when sitting at the steering bench. Ok this has to do with sailing a little bit

Nevertheless, overall the 410 is mostly a good and comfortable boat and the design quirks can be addressed to with a little thought and investment.

Re: Lagoon 410

Ahoy,
We ae seriously looking at putting an offer on a Lagoon 410 owners version and would appreciated any comments, recommendations etc. with respect to this boat for offshore passage making. Also, can anyone explain the "S-2 " designation?

Re: Lagoon 410

We are wondering now if we should be looking at the Owners Version or the 4 cabin, 2 head model. Would love to hear from anyone who can comment on whether they like their chosen model or whether they wish they had the other and why.

Re: Lagoon 410

With regards to the bridgedeck slamming I tend to disagree. We rarely had a solid hit, some splashing yes but rarely a real hit. When beating hard to windward in lots of wind it happened, but in normal conditions almost never.
In almost 3000 miles downwind on the atlantic crossing it happened not once.

What is annoying in the aft cabins is the noise level coming from square step in the underwing profile, where the bed sole is located. Even the smalles waves slap against it and make lots of noise. No substantial slamming but just annoying. We prefered to sleep in the front cabin when underway.

Which brings me to the different versions. We had a 4 cabin / 2 head version and really liked it. On passages you can choose to sleep in the quietest corner of the boat, depending on course and wave direction.
The heads are large enough to shower with two small kids.

The owners version bathroom is really nice but comes at the price of one cabin. You gain some office space, some need it some don't. Better than this useless sofa that many other model owners versions have there.

The 4 cabin / 4 head version could work out nice if you convert for example one head into a shower and another into a laundry area, leaving two heads for their intended use.

Re: Lagoon 410

One more thing on S2:
Ours was a pre-S2 model, it had the anchor hanging from the bridgedeck. If I'm not mistaken the S2 introduced the catwalk at the bow, where the chain runs to allow a more conventional setup with the anchor at the crossbeam.

I hated our setup. You need a special chain hook to fix the bridle, a simple hook falls off as you can't keep tension on it. Everytime it falls off it's a little work to get it back in position (which is under the net).
After dropping the anchor you need to ensure that your bow keeps facing toward the anchor. if you just let the boat drift backward it typically won't go straight backwards and the chain can chaff against the hull as it gets more tension. Can happen on a conventional setup, too, but much less often and violent.

Re: Lagoon 410

As far as I remember, the main changes from the 410 to 410 S2 are:

1) Big side windows in cabins allowing more light inside and a view to outside
2) The arrangement of the galley is different (or it might have been so already in some 410s?)
3) The halyards are brought from the mast to the cockpit
4) Electric winch for main halyard and mainsheet
5) The anchor placement to the bow (the catwalk over the trampoline)

Probably also an option for more powerful engines.

4 toilets would be a real waste of space in a cruising boat (not to mention an additional headache to keep them all working properly ), I mean it can be nice for each cabin to have their own, but the space could be used much better, you could fit one toilet+useable shower+storage space/laundry to each side.
