My Brit cars, MGA, MGB, AH3000 were all reliable especially next to the Italian one I owned. The Seagull was not. Could usually get it started but it would only run going downwind. As soon as I turned the dinghy upwind to get back to the boat, it would quit. No amount of effort would get it to start again till I rowed back back to the boat. It pulled that trick one too many times and is now resting peacefully on the bottom of Oponohu Bay, Moorea, FP if any one wants to look for it. Too bad that I couldn't maintain the magic of getting it to work, it was an ideal motor for the RedCrest. Nice light engine, could one hand it up on the storage bracket from the dinghy, and enough HP for what I wanted the engine for.

I have a 5 hp long shaft Seagull I'd like to part with for something around $300. Ran good around the harbor in Minnesota.

Strangely enough, my sailboat was built in 1962 with an outboard well intended for (only) a Seagull! There's a part of me that would like to get it just to restore my boat to its original design intent... but then again, maybe not. It is a beauty though! Brand new! Somehow it reminds me of all the surplus jeeps that were supposedly packed in cosmolene (?) that we all wanted to get back in high school.

Jim, why so nasty. Some people really like the old Seagulls. And it's hard to find two strokes any more. I'm trying to sell it not win you over. It's a new engine and has charm with a bit of collector value.

Used many of them through the years. Always found them reliable and much preferable to rowing!

Here's mine in the Bahamas. Got it almost free when its previous owner got mad with it !! A good cleaning and it was reliable transport.

With that nice case, it looks like it might have been meant for use as a boat show display.

An Avon Redcrest with a Seagull hanging on the back was the sign of a serious cruiser back in the sixties and seventies. I sold a lot of those combos.

On the subject of British built equipment, does anybody know where I can order Lucas wiring replacement smoke? A friend has an MG and all the smoke leaked out.

Hopcar, getting the smoke is easy. It's the special insertion tool for the smoke that's hard to come by. And if the insulation has charred as the smoke exited, you need some special Lucas SmokeSeal to get it to stay back inside... pretty hard duty for y our friend and his MG.

Thats really a great clean example of the Seagull engine. If you were't on the other side of the world I'd make an offer. I wish you good luck on your sale. Might be rather difficult here though after the degree of thread hack and slamming on your offer here. Welcome to CF.

No doubt this is a great example of a Seagull. Don't know if you could find another one in the world in new condition and there are certainly fans of the engine that would love to have it.

However in defense of the responders to this thread (myself included), the hyperbole in the original post did invite comment from some with a different experience and opinion on Seagull outboards.

As you point out, the engine is a long way off but there is a very active group of Seagull fans on the British forum www.ybw.com that might be a good place to post the ad.
