Re: Freaking Radar!

This might be a bit of a low tech solution but have you considered taking another person with you? Four hour watches = four hours sleep (you can double that if you take two crew)

And there is nothing that is going to alert you better in an impending collision than your mate screaming "it's a frickin tanker/whale/lightwhouse/reef we need to make like a sheperd and get the flock out of here"

Probably not helpful in your serch for tech solutions but that's what I'd do.

Part of the suggestions made to you for slowing down include buying a BOOK before you spend another wasted $750.

Singehanded Sailing by Richard Henderson.

Buy it.

Read it.

It will also save you a LOT of time asking what to some are pretty basic questions, and to others foolhardy ones.

Don't let your enthusiasm overcome your time line.

Good luck.

Re: Freaking Radar!

I have been away from my computer for a couple of months, so I find all this interesting. One of the last post's I saw from NOMN was that he was looking for a boat. A boat that maybe only a handfull were ever made. Did you find the impossible boat?

Now it sounds like you have a boat, have you sailed it yet? I hope you do not expect to put a bunch of electronic's on this 26ft boat and expect it all to work for more than 20 minutes at a time before the batterys are dead.

When sailing, life is about compromises, usally it comes down to money. Money dictates the size of your boat, and the size of your boat (if it is a small one) will usally dictate the amount of equipment you can reallisticly run on it. To me it sounds like you are trying to put 20K worth of eqipment on a 10K boat. If it were me I would rather have a 25K boat and 5K worth of equipment. Just my 2 cents.

If you are still in the dreaming stages of your adventure, go coastal cruising for 6 months to a year, before you plan the around the world trip. In that time you will get more knowlage than a life time of internet bloging.

Re: Freaking Radar!

Unfortunately, he is a lost cause. He won't listen to years of experience, or take tested and prudent actions to build his seamanship skills. While in the middle of the ocean, no one will be around to advise him on a course/an action to take. He shows immaturity, big time.

Re: Freaking Radar!

Don't knock enthusiasm! But I agree, NOMN seems to be rushing into this without adequate preparation. Suggestions:

* Crew on another boat for a while. There are many ways for a newcomer to get a ride, and you will learn a lot.

* Don't go solo until you have some real experience. Singlehanding is much tougher to do right, and the chances for a bad outcome are much greater. Look at the story of Skip Allen in 2008 (link). He had many years and many tens of thousands miles of solo sailing under his belt, and he ended up abandoning ship. This probably would not have happened if there had been another person on board.

* Look at the Singlehanded Sailing Society website. There is lots of good info here.

* Look at the Pacific Cup website for excellent general info on preparing your boat, and yourself, for a passage to Hawaii. They even have some old training seminar videos online.

Re: Freaking Radar!

I'm not rushing, I'm preparing.

I didn't say I was leaving tomorrow, I'm definitely going to have a lot of experience under my belt before I decide to head on a trans-oceanic journey.

Yes, got my impossible boat!! Check out the blog!

I'm very thankful to everyone who has helped me.

My enthusiasm will never die, not sure if it's a curse or a blessing.

Just got the Vesper today, the people over there are awesome.

Thanks for the tip!!!

Re: Freaking Radar!

I'm still confused about your boat.

It's not a 25D?

Did someone swap the OB for a diesel?

Re: Freaking Radar!

Nice clean boat! (A lot of error 404's on the web site though.)

Wear it in good health. And don't forget to toss a generous libation to Aeolus and Poseidon to get on their good side from the start.

No, Cape Dory made a few 26s with diesels. I never really understood why CD had so many models in the 25-30 range, all with similar lines and inboards (but usually different interiors).

His is the first one I've seen any kind of decent pictures of. I really like the interior arrangement, but I find it a little bit curious since every other Alberg CD I have seen has two bulkheads to push the load of the mast down to the keel.

NOMN what is her displacement?
