Generator Install

My wife and I have a 2009 Mahe and we are considering 2 options for a generator - primarily to run at least 1 of the 3 A/C units while at anchor.

Easy less expensive option is to do what the prior owner did - buy a small portable Honda and plug it in the shore power receptacle, running it as needed located in the cockpit.

Or install a small diesel in a permanent location somewhere on the boat.
I'm looking for input on this option from someone who has had one installed either by the factory or after delivery. I know the diesel is heavier, more expensive, and can be louder, but should offer more convenience of operation. I have 30HP Volvos in the engine bays now - not a lot of room there.
