Where to Find Information on Variation?

Where do I find information on magnetic variation in the c-maps, I'm reading in OpenCPN?

Re: Where to find information on variation?

soefarer..
I'm not sure it's stated in the c-maps like on most printed or BSB charts.
But there is a nice plugin to OCPN showing the magnetic variations for the actual position for the boat and, eligible, for the cursor.
Please visit PlugIns | Official OpenCPN Homepage and download the WMM World Magnetic Model plugin. It's a nice program that when activated can view data in a small window and also in the toolbar's icon. I think you will find all information on opencpn.org.

Re: Where to find information on variation?

Thank you very much. I have tried to install the plugin, but without success. I click the download, choose OpenCPN as the application to open it, and then it says "Unexpected parameter" - any advice on this?

Hello Soefarer,

The plugin is working well for me (XP 1Go - OpenCPN 3.1.1328).

The variation appears on the screen for both vectorial or raster charts.

Please gives more details on your configuration.

Please read About Plugins | Official OpenCPN Homepage, to understand how OpenCPN plugins are installed.

Re: Where to find information on variation?

Now I've read the procedure for installing plugins, and followed it. however, even if I place the downloaded file (wmm_win32_pi18_v06_pi (1).dll) in the plugin-directory and restart OpenCPN, it doesn't appear on the list of plugins (the plugin-tab in Options), and hence I can't enable it.
I run Windows XP.

Please publish your OpenCPN logfile. You'll find the location by pressing the blue "?" in the toolbar.
If you read the logfile, there should be a hint to what's going on.

Re: Where to find information on variation?

soefarer

Your installation is searching for plugins in
Quote:
C:\Programmer\OpenCPN\plugins
It only finds the default Dashboard and Grip plugins, but not the WMM plugin. Make sure that your WMM plugin is copied to this directory.

Soefarer..
OPCN obviously can't recognise it in the plugin directory.

1)
Are you sure that the file: "wmm_win32_pi18_v06_pi.dll"
really is present in the directory: "C:\Programmer\OpenCPN\plugins\"

2)
If so: you're referencing to "wmm_win32_pi18_v06_pi (1).dll)"
Maybe the " (1)" should be there but I'm doubtful, although my file is older. Something may have happened during download and copy? Try to rename the file to be alike my name above. And restart OCPN.

I'm as well at WinXP and it's work like a charm.

Re: Where to find information on variation?

Yeehaah! It works, after having renamed the file as suggested. Great.
Thank you very much for all your help.

As far as I understand, the Magnetic Plugin automatically updates variation, so that no yearly differences need to be calculated with?

Re: Where to Find Information on Variation?

Glad to here it's working.
About updating the variations data base.
Again, you'll find almost any answers in the excellent wiki at opencpn.org. There's a nice search function and it's almost extraordinary up to date. Even following the latest beta!
Some people here works hard.

So please visit: PlugIns | Official OpenCPN Homepage

There you can read about the WMM:
"Implements the NOAA World Magnetic Model
More information: World Magnetic Model - Home Page
The bundled WMM2010 model expires December 31, 2014."
