Rocks don't display

In OpenCPN 5.0 rocks are not displayed. User Standard Objects, Select All set. Rocks should be displayed near Stony Point MD (39o 10.35' N, 076o 30.78' W). The rocks are displayed in NOAA ECN Viewer. Rocks are not display anywhere in OpenCPN 5.0 for me.

Re: Rocks don't display

Do rocks display for you in OpenCPN 5.0? Am I missing a setting?

Re: Rocks don't display

Nothing wrong with the way OpenCPN displays rocks etc.
NOAA's ECN Viewer and OpenCPN shows identical view at the point you refer to.

Please read the friendly manual!

Select Display Category "All" or " User Standard".

Display Category "Base" or "Standard" will not display your rocks.
This is all following International Standards for how vector charts should work.

If you use "User Standard" look at Options->Charts->Vector Chart Display->User Standard Objects. Press the button "Reset to Standard" or "Select All".

For a better understanding of vector charts, please read the book "Introduction to Electronic Chart Navigation" by David Burch.

Re: Rocks don't display

Thomas,

That fixed it. I was confused by the old and new documentation. The Display Category is not on the Options | Charts | Vector Chart Display dialog anymore ,so I thought that Select All was sufficient. You showed me that the Display Category is now on the Chart Panel Options in OpenCPN 5.0.

Yes, David's book is recommended reading.

Thank You,

Grant

Read Introduction to Electronic Chart Navigation by David Burch, 2.2 Optional Display Modes.

OpenCPN Display Categories:

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...lay_categories

Notice that in OpenCPN 5.0, the Diplay Category has moved to the Main Toolbar in the lower right corner.

Re: Rocks don't display

I'm having the same problem - my display is showing virtually no shore detail. Not so much as a church steeple or even place names for coastal towns.

I'm new to OpenCPN, so perhaps I am just missing some obvious setting.

I have OpenCPN version 5.0.0 running.
My charts are for the Great Lakes and were purchased from oeSENC
at Options:Charts:Vector Chart Display I clicked on Select All for User Standard Objects

How do I go about getting shore details like place names and landmarks to display on the plotter? My old Garmin has all of this stuff and gives me details about anchorages and marinas in places along the coast. As mentioned by a previous poster my Garmin shows the submerged rocks at the entrance to a harbour, but they do not appear on the OpenCNP display.

Thanks for any help!

Please go back and read post #3 above! Select the correct Display Category.

There are no oeSENC charts for the Great Lakes. My guess is that you have Noaa's ENC charts.

Re: Rocks don't display

Thanks Thomas;

I figured out that I was looking in the wrong menu. Didn't realize that the Chart Panel had a second Options menu. I set Display Category: User Standard and now at least have some place names, but that is about all.

Under the oeSENC tab of the Charts menu I have "Canada 2020 - Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River". They seem to be based on the same charts as what is in my Garmin, but the Garmin versions sure have a lot of shore detail that is lacking in my OpenCPN version.

Sorry! I forgot the Canadian oeSENC's.

I think you are better off using the "All" Display category, until you have read up on the documentation.
Please read https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/about/ver500.html
For more/less details play around with the Options-> Display-> Advanced slide for Vector charts.
