Problem with connecting Simrad Halo 20

Chart overlay wo compass and true heading is not reliable. To use COG instead is mess as you've seen, that's not for navigation. Especially at low speed and a not straight course line.
Until you've got yourself a heading into OCPN (or to the radar scanner) you better open the PPI radar window and use the radar in "the old fashion way" instead of chart overlay. (Radar menu->Window->Show/Hide PPI window)

I don't quit understand the Autopilot connection unless you don't get a heading from that device into OCPN? That's sometimes possible.
